Chiefs notes: Kolby Smith out for the season

More News

Smith out for the season

Running back Kolby Smith is lost for the season after he injured a knee in the second quarter. Given Larry Johnson’s suspension, that leaves the Chiefs with Jamaal Charles, Dantrell Savage and Jackie Battle at running back for next Sunday’s game against the Chargers in San Diego.

Battle, who played for the Chiefs late last season, was promoted from the practice squad for Sunday’s game, but he didn’t get the ball.

Linebacker Derrick Johnson and cornerback Brandon Flowers went out with hamstring injuries, and neither player returned.

Punter Dustin Colquitt and cornerback Patrick Surtain didn’t dress for the game because of injuries.

Not liking the call

Predictably, the Chiefs were unanimous in their opinion of the pass-interference penalty call against Tony Gonzalez that cost them a first down on a late fourth-quarter drive.

“I don’t understand it,” said Gonzalez, who was called for pushing Ronde Barber to create a passing lane. “I don’t agree with it. That’s how it goes. I don’t think I’m calling a referee out. I don’t think I’m going to get fined for saying that.”

Quarterback Tyler Thigpen said, “I think that’s a no-call.”

Wide receiver Mark Bradley was near the play.

“I just thought the guy fell down,” Bradley said. “You’d think a Hall of Famer would get a call.”

Talib’s day

Former Kansas cornerback Aqib Talib, the Buccaneers’ first-round draft pick this year, served as Tampa Bay’s nickel back and was matched up with the Chiefs’ Dwayne Bowe. Bowe beat him for the game’s first touchdown, but Talib made a nice play breaking up another pass intended for Bowe.

“This was a great day,” Talib said. “It doesn’t matter how you start, it’s how you finish. We’ll take it.”

Talib had dinner on Saturday night with some of his former Kansas teammates and got them sideline passes for the game.

Bucs’ best coach

With Sunday’s win, Jon Gruden became the Buccaneers’ all-time leader in wins by a coach with 57 (54 regular season and three postseason wins), surpassing Tony Dungy, who had 56 victories during 1996-01. Gruden, in his seventh season with the Bucs, has won three division titles, the most in team history, and led the team to its first Super Bowl win following the 2002 season.

Props for plays

Gruden was impressed with the Chiefs’ play-calling on Sunday, especially the direct snaps to running back Jamaal Charles and the 37-yard touchdown pass from wide receiver Mark Bradley to quarterback Tyler Thigpen.

“They really had us on the ropes,” Gruden said. “It was a unique package. Maybe we’ll steal a few of those ideas next week.

“We played a young quarterback with life in his legs. They’ve got some good players. Charles, Tony Gonzalez, they’ve got some talent and skill. And Bowe is a heck of a receiver. They had us mixed up a little bit. They did a nice job running the ball from some weird formations and some play-action passes that were just downright nasty.”

The Buccaneers couldn’t believe the Chiefs have won just one game this season.

“Kansas City is definitely one of those teams where their record is not who they are on the field,” said Tampa Bay wide receiver Antonio Bryant. “They’re a team that could sneak up on you and beat you.”

Improved run defense

Tampa Bay rushed for only 81 yards, the lowest total the Chiefs allowed this season. They last allowed fewer in a November game last season at Indianapolis, when they yielded 66.

The Bucs rushed 25 times but had no gain of more than 10 yards.

Tampa played without its second-leading rusher, Warrick Dunn, who was inactive because of an injury.

Triple-threat Thigpen

Quarterback Tyler Thigpen became the fifth player in team history to throw for a touchdown and also score by rushing and receiving. The others are Marcus Allen, Bert Coan, Mike Garrett and Curtis McClinton.

Thigpen is the only QB in the group. The others were running backs.
