Kick and pick help Mizzou survive at Baylor

WACO, Texas | Jeff Wolfert contended he was cool as he lined up a 34-yard field goal that would shut up more than 35,000 Baylor football fans at Floyd Casey Stadium.

Game tied. Just 2 minutes, 35 seconds to play. And if Wolfert missed — as the Baylor fans prayed so loudly he would — No. 14 Missouri’s season could go up in flames.

Baylor, which roared back from a two-touchdown deficit at the half to build all the momentum in the world toward a monumental upset, knew that.

Heck, MU linebacker Sean Weatherspoon, standing on the sideline as Wolfert lined up intent on making the 52nd field goal of his career, knew it.

“Those guys had a chance to win the game,” Weatherspoon said. “You’ve got people chanting ‘Overrated!’

Wolfert said it didn’t matter. Didn’t faze him.

“I took a couple of breaths and then went out and made the kick,” Wolfert said.

Right down the middle. Missouri 31-28.

Only then — with 2:31 still to play — Missouri’s defense had to stop Baylor and true freshman quarterback sensation Robert Griffin from driving the length of the field, from tying it, or winning it outright.

Given that Baylor went four for four on fourth-down gambles in the second half, everyone knew it could happen.

Missouri senior linebacker Brock Christopher made sure it didn’t.

On third and 8 from the Baylor 23, Christopher stepped in front of a Griffin pass over the middle and picked it off, sealing Mizzou’s victory. It was the first interception of Griffin’s season and career at Baylor.

“You win by 100 or you win by three points like we did,” Christopher said. “If doesn’t matter if you win.

“We try to stay as calm as possible.”

Some teammates, like Wolfert, said that was how it was just before Christopher made the play.

“Calm and collected,” Wolfert said, although he smirked.

“I was excited,” said tailback Derrick Washington, who ran for 97 yards on 14 carries, giving MU a running threat it very much needed as quarterback Chase Daniel completed 30 of 38 passes to his receivers for 318 yards and three touchdowns, but two interceptions as well.

One was picked in the end zone. Missouri threw away another scoring opportunity when reserve tailback De’Vion Moore fumbled the ball away at the Baylor 35.

“Nobody was calm,” Washington sputtered. “Everybody was excited.”

That was the effect Griffin had on the day. He hit 26 of 35 passes for 283 yards and two touchdowns. He netted only 33 yards on 17 rushes because he was sacked four times by the Tigers. But Griffin kept coming back for more.

MU coach Gary Pinkel kept warning his players not to let Baylor hang around.

“The longer they’re in, the stronger they get,” Pinkel said, adding, “You give them a remarkable amount of credit.

“That being said, I’m proud of our team,” Pinkel continued. “When it came time to make a drive, to make a kick, to make a kickoff return, to make a stop, we did.”

Tied 28-28, Missouri drove 75 yards — from its own 10 to the Baylor 15 — in 13 plays in just under four minutes.

There was a scary moment, on third and 5, when Daniel tried to hit Tommy Saunders — who caught seven passes for 109 yards and a touchdown Saturday — with one more toss for a first down.

Lake Jordan nearly intercepted it. Should, perhaps, have intercepted it. He got his hands on the ball as he dove, but the ball fell incomplete.

Saunders said he neither moaned nor gave a sigh of relief.

“It happened so quick,” Saunders said, “I didn’t have time to do anything like that.”

On came Wolfert. Field goal. Christopher’s pick. Victory, Missouri moving to 7-2 overall and 3-2 in the Big 12 North.

William Moore said that ultimately it was all as cool as Wolfert.

“Kinda,” he said. “Two claps and he’s back to the locker room.”
