Missouri’s Daniel and Coffman share more than a first name

COLUMBIA | Chase Coffman remembers that on his official recruiting visit to Missouri it was Chase Daniel who wanted Coffman to become a Tiger the most.

“He’s saying how great it would be if I came here,” Coffman said. “We’d be good friends, hang out and we could do some great stuff when we got here.”

So let it be said, so let it be done.

At the close of their four years together at Mizzou, Chase Coffman will join the alumni association as arguably the greatest tight end in MU football history.

Chase Daniel will, without argument, close out his collegiate career as the greatest Tiger quarterback of all time.

It isn’t something that Coffman and Daniel talk to each other about. But neither does either deny the contention when someone brings it up.

“You’re starting out together,” Coffman said. “You’ve gone through all this stuff. You have somebody close to you like that. You’re going out with them with these great things happening.”

Heading into Missouri’s Saturday afternoon kickoff at Baylor, Daniel is the Missouri career leader in passing yards (10,855 and the only Tiger QB ever to throw for as many as 8,800).

No one has ever thrown more touchdown passes than Daniel’s 85. He’s by far the most efficient passer in MU history.

Coffman, meanwhile, already owns the MU career records for receptions (220) and TD catches (25) and needs just 289 receiving yards to eclipse Justin Gage’s school career record of 2,704.

Ask Daniel whether Coffman will make it and you get an “of course, dummy” look.

“He’s made some amazing catches for me,” Daniel said. “I realize that probably 20 times I’ve said ‘That’s just unbelievable.’

“NFL scouts have to be drooling … to get to him. His athletic ability is so much underhyped. We can put him on corners, linebackers and safeties, and he creates a mismatch no matter who he’s up against.”

Not that Daniel plays favorites among his receivers. Sure, Coffman has caught more Daniel passes this year (63) and throughout his career than anybody else.

But if Jeremy Maclin, the wide receiver who has 58 catches this season, had two more years with Daniel as his quarterback, Coffman’s career receiving marks probably would be in danger.

That said, most teammates see the special bond shared by Chase Daniel and Chase Coffman.

“Those two guys, they act alike,” Maclin said. “They’re always laughing together. They’re always around each other. They have a special thing.”

There are differences.

Deadpans center Tim Barnes: “One of ’em’s pretty tall (Coffman’s 6 feet 6), and the other’s pretty short (Daniel is 6 feet).

“But they are a lot alike. They have a hidden humor. They’re always laughing about things that may not seem funny to anybody else.”

Coffman admits it. Compare it to a tacit sense of communication that defensive tackle Ziggy Hood and linebacker Brock Christopher seem to share on the other side of the ball.

“Only four of us in that class came in and played as true freshmen,” Coffman said.

Daniel and Coffman on offense, Hood and Christopher on defense.

“You bond with those guys. We had the same schedules. Some of the same classes. You’re spending a lot of time together.”

Still, the Chase to Chase connection is special.

“We’ve spent so much time together,” Coffman said, “watching film together, and just hanging out. We kind of know what’s going to happen before it happens.”

Heck, what’s so special about that? Fans know what’s going to happen Saturday afternoon at Baylor.

Chase Daniel is going to take the snap from center. He’s going to look to Chase Coffman running across the middle or hanging out in the flats. He’s going to throw the ball to his big tight end.

Coffman will catch it, turn up field and run or vault over the first would-be tackler.

Then Daniel and Coffman will do it all again. And again. And again.

“We know we can trust each other to make a play, to go out there and give 100 percent.”

It has been that way from the start.
