It’s no coincidence the Rams will add Vermeil to their stadium Ring of Honor on the day the quarterback who helped Vermeil win the franchise’s lone Super Bowl also is in town.
Vermeil coached the Rams’ 23-16 victory over the Tennessee Titans after the 1999 season, clinched by Warner’s touchdown pass to Isaac Bruce. Vermeil will be honored at halftime of St. Louis’ game Sunday against the Cardinals, whose offense is led by Warner.
Vermeil picked the Cardinals game to be honored because he wanted Warner, who won two NFL MVPs with the Rams, to be there. That means a lot to Warner.
“One of the greatest years of my life was that year with coach Vermeil, and winning the Super Bowl,” Warner said. “I just can’t say enough about him.
“It’s neat that I’m going to get an opportunity to be playing the game where he’s inducted into the ring of honor.”
Vermeil was 5-11 and 4-12 in the first two seasons with the Rams before the franchise’s surprise breakthrough in ’99. The keys to a 13-3 season were Warner’s rise from obscurity after Trent Green’s season-ending knee injury in the preseason, and the predraft trade for running back Marshall Faulk.
Vermeil was chosen coach of the year and then retired from the Rams. He coached five more years with the Chiefs, going 44-36, before retiring again after the 2005 season.
The halftime ceremony will feature a video tribute.
Warner played for the Rams during 1998-2003, winning two NFL MVP awards and a Super Bowl MVP award.
Coach Tony Dungy said Jackson was injured during Wednesday’s workout when he tried to stop. The players were not even in pads when it occurred.
Dungy said the initial tests showed Jackson had significant damage to the knee and would miss an extended period, probably the rest of the year.
•BENGALS LOSE SAFETY: Dexter Jackson, who has missed most of the season because of a thumb injury, has been placed on injured reserve because of a hamstring injury suffered in practice. He missed five of the Bengals’ eight games because of the thumb.
•JACKSON GOOD TO GO: Rams running back Steven Jackson practiced for the second straight day and was optimistic he’d be back in the lineup after missing a game because of a thigh injury.
•SURGERY SUCCESSFUL: Falcons rookie left tackle Sam Baker underwent successful back surgery. Baker, a first-round pick from USC, has started five games but was held out of last week’s game against Philadelphia for what was called a hip injury.
