Special teams hit again
Long snapper Jean-Philippe Darche suffered a season-ending knee injury during Sunday’s loss to the New York Jets, the latest member of the Chiefs’ special-teams squad to be replaced.
Darche was placed on injured reserve Wednesday and will require surgery to repair his knee. The Chiefs signed free-agent snapper Thomas Gafford to a two-year contract.
In a little more than a week, the Chiefs have practiced and played with a new kicker, punter/holder and now a new snapper. The team replaced kicker Nick Novak with Connor Barth last week, and punter/holder Dustin Colquitt has a groin injury and didn’t play Sunday. Steve Weatherford played in Colquitt’s place.
“We’ve done it all,” Edwards said.
Edwards said he was uncertain whether Colquitt might be healthy in time for Sunday’s game against Tampa Bay. Colquitt didn’t practice Wednesday.
Other roster moves
Kansas City signed tackle Andrew Carnahan to a two-year deal. He spent parts of the last two seasons, including the first seven weeks of this season, on Jacksonville’s practice squad. He was a seventh-round pick in 2007. The Chiefs released guard Brian De La Puente to make room for Carnahan. … The Chiefs signed cornerback Michael Grant to their practice squad.
Gray will be No. 2 QB
Veteran Quinn Gray will be Tyler Thigpen’s backup Sunday, moving past Ingle Martin on the depth chart.
Edwards said Gray had been fast to pick up Kansas City’s offense, and Gray’s experience gave him the edge over Martin.
“He’s a quick study,” Edwards said of Gray. “If we have to put him in a game, we feel comfortable with him.”
Injury report
Cornerbacks Patrick Surtain (quad) and Dimitri Patterson (foot) didn’t practice Wednesday. Running back Jamaal Charles (ankle), linebacker Weston Dacus (groin) and free safety Jarrad Page (groin) were limited.
