EDMONTON, Alberta | Dustin Penner was in the right place at the right time for the Edmonton Oilers on Sunday night.
Penner scored his second goal of the game with 5.4 seconds left, giving Edmonton a 3-2 win over the Colorado Avalanche.
Penner, who also scored earlier in the third period, tipped Ethan Moreau’s shot past goalie Peter Budaj in the final seconds. Shawn Horcoff also scored for Edmonton.
Joe Sakic and Milan Hejduk had goals for the Avalanche. Hejduk got his goal on a penalty shot with 10 minutes left.
The Oilers struck first during a power play 7 minutes into the game. Ales Hemsky made a long pass at the side of the net to Horcoff, who batted the puck in before Budaj could get across to stop it.
Colorado appeared to tie the game 2 minutes later when Sakic came in on a two-on-one and took a shot. Edmonton goalie Matthieu Garon made the original save but the puck went in when Sakic crashed into the net. The goal was waved off following a video review.
Sakic got a goal that counted just past the midway point of the second period.

Phoenix goalie Ilya Bryzgalov made 34 saves against his former team. Shane Doan added a pair of goals for Phoenix.
•Lukas Kaspar’s first NHL goal was all that Sharks backup goalie Brian Boucher needed. Boucher made 21 saves in the game. Defenseman Rob Blake returned to play in Los Angeles for the first time since signing with San Jose as a free agent in the offseason and was greeted with boos whenever he touched the puck. Blake skated for the Kings in 14 of his 19 NHL seasons.
