Victory puts Texas in ‘different place’

More News

DALLAS | From the coach who knows something about momentous college football moments came this declaration in the aftermath of Texas’ 45-35 triumph over top-ranked Oklahoma.

“This was one of the greatest football games I’ve ever seen,” the Longhorns’ Mack Brown said.

Old adversaries staged a classic on a warm Saturday afternoon in front of nearly 100,000 at the Cotton Bowl with the outcome springing a mild surprise, if a team ranked fifth can be credited with such an achievement.

It can because of the game’s trend — Oklahoma had won six of the previous nine confrontations between Bob Stoops and Brown.

But this is a different Texas team. It is neither unsure of its ability nor does it revolve around star power like Vince Young.

“There are not individuals on the team,” Brown said. “There are not guys who are about themselves. Everybody questioned this team, including me. I didn’t know how good we are.”

Now he knows. These are the best Longhorns since Young quarterback-kept his way into the end zone in the Rose Bowl triumph over Southern California to give Texas the national championship three years ago. With Saturday’s triumph, the Longhorns can begin to think in those terms again.

They won’t get a chance to knock off another top-five team after the next opponent, No. 3 Missouri, fell to Oklahoma State on Saturday night. But that doesn’t change Texas’ more ambitious agenda.

“This puts us in a different place,” Brown said. “Now, we’re looking at a bigger goal.”

They are because Texas responded to everything Oklahoma threw its way.

The Sooners jumped to a 14-3 lead on the second of quarterback Sam Bradford’s five touchdown passes. The game teetered on the brink of a runaway until Oklahoma kicked off.

Speedster Jordan Shipley gathered it in on the 4 and blistered the Sooners’ coverage team. Stoops did the same thing when it returned to the sideline.

“We needed a big play,” Shipley said. “It was a lot of fun.”

A blast for Texas, which had turned the game by exposing a flaw. The Sooners entered the game ranked 10th in the Big 12 in kick coverage.

“It got us,” Stoops said. “We had all the momentum.”

The game shifted gradually. A Texas interception by Earl Thomas late in the half led to a Longhorns field goal that sliced the deficit to 21-20 at the break.

The Sooners led 28-27 when a special-teams moment again went in Texas’ favor. On fourth and 6 from the Oklahoma 48, punter Mike Knall got the snap and took off to the right. He was dragged down from behind by Curtis Brown less than a yard away from the first down, touching off a euphoric scene on the Texas sideline.

Oklahoma worked on the trick play all week, seeing something in Texas’ coverage that inspired the call.

“It was a good play, I thought I had it,” Knall said. “I came up just short.”

The drive ended in a Lawrence Hunter field goal for a 30-28 Texas lead, its first of the game.

Back came the Sooners, marching 57 yards for yet another Bradford touchdown pass drive early in the fourth quarter.

But Texas answered again. Quarterback Colt McCoy’s final numbers weren’t as prolific as Bradford, who finished with 387 yards, but McCoy was every bit as effective, never more so than this possession.

McCoy passed for 49 yards, with the big one going for 37 to Shipley who found a seam in the middle of the field. Cody Johnson’s 1-yard run put Texas ahead for good.
