Ueberroth goes on offensive
Peter Ueberroth took a swipe at international officials critical of the money the U.S. Olympic Committee receives, setting up what could be uncomfortable moments for the Chicago group that is trying to land the 2016 Games.
“Who pays the bill for the world Olympic movement?” Ueberroth said Saturday in his final speech as committee chairman. “Starting in 1988, U.S. corporations have paid 60 percent of all the money, period. … The rest of the world pays 40 percent. It’s pretty simple math.”
Earlier this year, International Olympic Committee members Denis Oswald and Hein Verbruggen said the amount of money the U.S. committee received — 13 percent of U.S. TV rights fees and 20 percent of global marketing revenues — was not morally acceptable and called for the revenue-sharing deal to be revisited.
Australian wins Ironman
Australia’s Craig Alexander rallied Saturday to win the Ironman World Championship.
The 35-year-old triathlete from Sydney completed the 140.6-mile endurance test in 8 hours, 17 minutes, 45 seconds.
Alexander, second last year in his first Hawaii Ironman, was 11th at the end of the 112-mile bicycle ride. But he moved up after run leaders Torbjorn Sindballe of Denmark and Normann Stadler of Germany faded. Britain’s Chrissie Wellington won her second consecutive women’s title, finishing in 9:06:23. She overcame a flat tire that cost her 10 minutes on the bike ride.
Klitschko again holds title
Vitali Klitschko reclaimed the WBC belt Saturday night in Berlin, stopping Samuel Peter with a technical knockout.
Peter chose not to come back out after eight rounds that saw him weaving and occasionally wobbling as Klitschko landed a persistent stream of heavy left jabs to Peter’s head.
The fight was Klitschko’s first since he announced his comeback from injuries last year. His younger brother, Wladimir, holds the IBF, IBO and WBO heavyweight belts.
•Chad Dawson thoroughly dominated three-time champion Antonio Tarver to capture the IBF-IBO light heavyweight title.
Ellis suspended 30 games
The Golden State Warriors suspended injured guard Monta Ellis for 30 games without pay Saturday for violating his lucrative new contract by getting into a moped accident.
Ellis, who agreed to a six-year deal worth $66 million in July, severely sprained his ankle in a low-speed crash in late August.
•Miami Heat center Jamaal Magloire will miss at least six weeks with a broken left hand, and could be sidelined even longer if surgery is required to repair the fracture.
