But he got himself in hot water over a minute-long tirade to his team during which he used the “F” word 16 times. A recording of the incident was first posted on The Wichita Eagle’s Web site.
High school administrators learned of the tape and alerted Superintendent David Flowers. Dreiling was given a reprimand, though few details have been released.
“Probably less formal language is used in coaching situations,” Flowers said, but he added that coaches and teachers should not have different standards.
Players were participating in a team camp at Pittsburg State University in June when someone recorded Dreiling’s shouting rant.
“I am going to (expletive) make your (expletive) lives hell if you (expletive) people don’t wake up,” he said to his players. “If this (expletive) (expletive) continues, I will (expletive) call the charter bus and get our (expletive) (expletive) home.”
Also during the recording, Dreiling told a player to cut his hair and told someone else he would “cut your (expletive) nuts off.”
Joe Heeney, father of a current team member, vigorously defended the coach. Allen Fee, who also has a son playing for Dreiling, said the coach brought discipline to the classroom and the football field. School board member Peggy Childs compared the recording with pulling an isolated item out of the Bible and ignoring what happened before or after.
Dreiling declined media invitations to respond to questions about the reprimand. But he did tell a reporter: “You can check any of our players, ma’am. I think they’ll have their nuts.”
