•Arizona QB Kurt Warner won’t retire until someone pulls the jersey off his back.
•Cincinnati coach Marvin Lewis will not be fired at the end of this season, no matter how bad it gets. He’s under contract through 2010, and owner Mike Brown isn’t going to eat two years of salary.
•Oakland’s strong-legged Shane Lechler will punt away from New Orleans’ Reggie Bush, who returned two punts for TDs last Monday night against Minnesota. If Lechler lets Bush return a punt, Al Davis will cut him on the spot.
3 who need big games
•Chargers RB LaDainian Tomlinson. He played only a handful of snaps against New England in the AFC championship game after suffering a knee injury, and now, bothered by a sore toe, he’s averaging just 3.7 yards per carry with four TDs in San Diego’s 2-3 start.
•Baltimore K Matt Stover. The last of the original Ravens, he has made just four of seven field goal attempts and was booed when he came off the field after missing a 45-yarder in the Ravens’ 13-10 loss to Tennessee.
•Chicago RT John St. Clair. He will have his hands full with Atlanta DE John Abraham, who has a league-leading seven of the Falcons’ nine sacks.
3 questions
with Miami QB Chad Pennington
•What were your expectations when you arrived in Miami?
“I had some experience with Bill Parcells. I knew what the system was about. I knew that it would be about hard work, it would be about discipline, it would be about attention to detail.”
•How would you describe the evolution of the “Wildcat” formation with the direct snap to the running back?
“Any time you put in an awkward formation or an awkward offensive set, you never know how it’s going to work. Sometimes it just blows up in your face. Our running backs, what can you say? They’ve just done an excellent job of finding those creases and finding those holes.”
•What does it mean to be called a “game manager?”
“People use the term in a negative way … . Sometimes it’s just not sexy enough. But I know it wins games.”
Inside the NFC
NFC South rivals Carolina and Tampa Bay have met 15 times since the Panthers came into existence in 1995, with eight games decided by no more than eight points.
Inside the AFC
Ronnie Brown has rushed for five touchdowns and passed for another in back-to-back upsets of the Patriots and Chargers.
