The Wizards maintained their Major League Soccer playoff hopes with a tie last weekend against Chicago, mainly because the out-of-town scoreboard was friendly to them.
Three of the teams who were bunched with the Wizards in the race for the two wild-card berths lost and one tied.
But the Wizards, who face the New England Revolution at 7 tonight at CommunityAmerica Ballpark, can’t expect that kind of help every week.
Kansas City, 8-10-9 for 33 points, and D.C. United trail FC Dallas and Colorado by one point for the eighth and final playoff spot. They are three points behind New York and Real Salt Lake, two points ahead of Toronto FC and three ahead of San Jose.
“This year there is even more parity, because everyone is still in it,” Wizards coach Curt Onalfo said. “Often you’ll find this time of the year, there will be teams who are out of it and have kind of given up, and there will be teams who are way ahead, and will rest players, and that affects the score.
“But right now, everyone is fighting for everything they can get. I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t looking at the other results. We can control our performance and our approach, and we’re concentrating on this game and trying to get the three points we need and go from there.”
Though New England, 12-8-7, is one of three teams that has clinched a playoff spot, the Revolution is just a point ahead of Chicago for second place in the Eastern Conference.
“In terms of who needs to win the game more, we do,” Onalfo said. “But they are a team that traditionally knows how to play for 90 minutes. That’s the hallmark of their team.
“Teams also want to be playing well as they go into the playoffs. Not for a second do I think they’re going to take it lightly. I’m hoping our will to win will be a difference in the game.”
With three games to go — two against New England and one against San Jose — it’s possible the Wizards could finish in a tie for the final playoff berth with any of seven other teams. None of the 14 teams has been eliminated.
So it can come down to tie breakers. The MLS tie-breaking procedures to determine playoff positions are:
•Head-to-head play.
•Greater goal differential against all other teams.
•Greatest number of total goals scored.
The good news: the Wizards are 1-0-1 vs. New York and Real Salt Lake. The bad news: They are 0-1 vs. San Jose. The OK news: They are 1-1 vs. D.C. United and Colorado and 0-0-2 vs. Dallas.
Kansas City is not in great shape when it comes to goal-differential.
The Wizards are at minus-6, and only D.C. United and Toronto FC are worse, at minus-8. And the Wizards have scored just 30 goals, which leads only Toronto (29) and San Jose (27).
“The last three years, our playoff hopes came down to the last game,” Wizards captain Jimmy Conrad said. “We’re very familiar with these situations.”
Indeed, in 2005, the Wizards needed a win in the regular-season finale to make the playoffs but tied Dallas 2-2 and missed the postseason; in 2006, they needed a tie but lost 3-2 at New York; and last year they needed a win and beat Dallas 2-0 and reached the postseason.
“We leave focusing on the other teams up to the coaches, and they can check to see how mathematically it will work out,” Wizards defender Tyson Wahl said. “We’re focusing on how we’re going to win, we’re not focusing on how other teams might lose for it to work out for us.”
