Crenshaw turns back clock

Ben Crenshaw found his long-lost golf game Friday, shooting a 4-under 66 for a 1-stroke lead over Fred Funk at the midway point of the Senior Players Championship in Timonium, Md. Crenshaw, who has just one top-10 finish this year, said: “It’s kind of unexplainable for me. I’ve been anything but predictable over my career.”

Chris Stroud, who played college golf at Lamar University in Beaumont, Texas, shot a 6-under 64 at the Texas Open in San Antonio and held a 2-stroke lead at the midway point.

In-Kyung Kim shot a 3-under 69 in cold, windy conditions and held a 1-stroke lead over Molly Fankhauser in the Longs Drugs Challenge in Danville, Calif. Lorena Ochoa was just 2 strokes back.

Athletes getting sentenced

Former 100-meter-dash world record holder Tim Montgomery, whose record was nullified because of doping, was sentenced to five years in prison for selling heroin to an informant. Montgomery, 33, will serve the sentence after completing a 46-month prison term for an unrelated conviction in New York.

Tough to find his way

Two-time defending Iditarod champion Lance Mackey of Fairbanks, Alaska, has negotiated the nearly unmarked trails of the Alaska wilderness almost flawlessly.

But he was a bit concerned before this week’s trip to New York for an appearance on “Late Night With Conan O’Brien.” He told the Anchorage Daily News he feared getting lost in the big city — even with a street map.

“I’m not sure how to read one,” he said. “But if there’s a trail marker, I’ll be all right.”

U.S. facing Cuba

When the U.S. men’s soccer team plays Cuba in Washington tonight, it may be facing a depleted Cuban roster. Cuba coach Reinhold Fanz told reporters that two players have gone missing, possibly in an attempt to defect to the U.S. The Washington Post identified them as midfielder Pedro Faife and forward Reynier Alcantara.

The game is a World Cup qualifying game. The U.S. played in Cuba last month. A win guarantees the Americans a spot in the next round of World Cup qualifying. The game will be televised at 6 p.m. on ESPNC.
