“One of the dirtiest teams I’ve ever played against,” Daniel said after the Tigers’ 52-17 victory over Saturday.
Precisely what he meant was uncertain because Daniel didn’t elaborate. But if he was talking about undisciplined play, some figures support the charge.
The Cornhuskers tied a school record with 14 penalties in the loss. They rank 115th of 119 Division I-A programs in penalties per game. (Texas Tech is tied for 117th.)
One of the two personal-foul penalties Saturday was a late hit on Daniel.
“We’ve got to play with more discipline, and that comes from me and the staff,” Nebraska coach Bo Pelini said. “We have to stress it, have to keep stressing it.”
If the Cornhuskers are at times over-amped on that side of the ball, it may be because Pelini, a longtime defensive coach, felt the need to put a charge into a defense that unraveled at the end of last year.
Remember the 76-39 loss to Kansas, the 65-51 loss to Colorado?
Nebraska now takes on a Texas Tech team that’s just as potent as Mizzou. Red Raiders quarterback Graham Harrell was chosen Big 12 player of the week after tying a personal record with six touchdown passes against Kansas State.
“I’m a fighter, and we’re going to come out fighting,” Pelini said.
Let’s hope, for Nebraska, it will be the kind of fighting that doesn’t draw flags.
•Have we heard the end of the expectorate-gate?
Apparently. The issue dried up Monday for Pelini and Missouri coach Gary Pinkel.
“We communicated with Missouri, we investigated, we addressed the allegations, and at this point as an issue, it’s over,” Pelini said. “A lot of it was ‘He said, he said.’ ”
Asked whether he knew to whom Daniel was referring, Pelini called it “a little bit gray.”
Pinkel also declared it over.
“As far as I’m concerned, from a University of Missouri standpoint, it’s a dead issue,” Pinkel said.
•How is coach Ron Prince going to fix the Kansas State defense?
The Wildcats rank last in the Big 12 in total defense (yards allowed), and Saturday’s 30-point home loss to Texas Tech was about being a step slow.
“We were a step away from a sack, a step away from getting a hand on a ball,” Prince said. “Those are execution issues.”
•“I’m trying to figure out the final ingredient to throw into this thing.”
| Iowa State coach Gene Chizik on how to get his program over the hump.
• “He killed us last year when he broke contain.”
| Colorado coach Dan Hawkins on Kansas quarterback Todd Reesing, who pulled off his redshirt against the Buffaloes as a freshman and has excelled since.
•Bob Stoops and Mack Brown face off for the 10th time on Saturday in the Red River Rivalry at the Cotton Bowl. Stoops owns a 6-3 lead in the personal series.
•The best opportunity for a Big 12 victory for Kansas State and Texas A&M may be on Saturday when the Wildcats visit the Aggies.
