Penguins get off to good start with OT win

More News

STOCKHOLM, Sweden | It was the first time Ottawa Senators captain Daniel Alfredsson had played in his native Sweden with his NHL team — and Tyler Kennedy spoiled it.

Kennedy scored with 25 seconds left in overtime, giving the Pittsburgh Penguins a 4-3 win over the Senators on Saturday night in the first NHL regular-season opener in Sweden. Kennedy also scored in the first period.

Alfredsson was held without a point — but his linemates, Dany Heatley and Jason Spezza, each scored a goal.

The winning goal came after Spezza turned over the puck to Kennedy at the blue line. Kennedy skated in all alone and scored with a wrist shot from the left circle.

“He (Spezza) just kicked the puck up and I just tried to get the puck towards the net and shoot as hard as I can,” Kennedy said.

“I try to get as many pucks on the goal as I can, and tonight they went in.”

Penguins defenseman Rob Scuderi forced overtime when he beat Senators goalie Martin Gerber 3:56 into the third period. Sidney Crosby assisted on the goal.

Evgeni Malkin scored a short-handed goal in the second period for Pittsburgh.

Rangers 2, Lightning 1

PRAGUE, Czech Republic | Markus Naslund came through in his debut with the New York Rangers even though he wasn’t the star Czech fans had hoped to see.

Signed in the offseason to replace Jaromir Jagr, Naslund scored a goal in New York’s win over the Tampa Bay Lightning on Saturday.

“I didn’t replace Jaromir; I don’t think anyone can,” Naslund said. “I ’m just trying to find my game and playing to my potential.”

The sold-out crowd at the O2 Arena was quiet during the opening stages of the game, and many fans wore New York Rangers jerseys in a reminder that when they bought their tickets, Czech star Jagr was still in New York.

The Rangers still had Czechs Petr Prucha and Michal Rozsival, while Tampa Bay featured Vaclav Prospal and Radim Vrbata, and the crowd cheered more as the game progressed.

“It was a great atmosphere, the fans were really into it,” Naslund said. “It was fun.”

Naslund scored with 1:52 remaining in the second period. The Lightning’s Martin St. Louis tied the game 3:57 into the final period, but Brandon Dubinsky scored the winning goal with 5:44 left.
