During Friday’s afternoon practice, Dale Earnhardt Jr.’s car blew its right rear tire at about 200 mph. The explosion blew some of the sheet metal off the car and sent it spinning. Several other cars running in a pack with Earnhardt got caught up.
Among them were Kasey Kahne, David Reutimann and Chase drivers Clint Bowyer and Tony Stewart. Earnhardt had to pull out his backup car.
Stewart’s team opted to try to repair his, a move that was not fully endorsed by the driver.
“That was Zippy’s decision,” Stewart said, referring to crew chief Greg Zipadelli.
In the first practice Friday, Earnhardt blew an engine.
•JOHNSON SHOCKED: Alan Miller, the attorney who, along with two-Indy 500-winner Helio Castroneves, was indicted on tax-evasion charges this week, is also the attorney for Jimmie Johnson.
Johnson was asked his reaction to the Miller-Castroneves situation.
“It’s certainly shocking,” Johnson said. “Alan has been my attorney since I was 15 years old. He’d been a great friend and has helped me with a lot of different things. I have an outside tax group that I use, so he really is my attorney. As of now, everything is still the same. I’m learning a lot as time goes on here, and there is still a lot to be investigated and covered moving forward. So, I’ll certainly keep my eyes on the subject and (will be) trying to figure out what’s going on.”
