Last week’s rankings in parentheses

Star of the week

At the 12-team Tabor Invitational cross country meet last weekend, Johnson County Community College sophomore Temer Yimer, a graduate of Park Hill South, placed third in the 5K with a time of 18 minutes, 27.31 seconds, the sixth-fastest time for that distance in school history. She also set a team record for the best time recorded by a JCCC runner in that event, breaking the previous best mark of 18:47.61 set last year by Christa Heideman.

Team to watch

Emporia State’s volleyball team was expected to be good. The Hornets started the season ranked in NCAA Division II. But the Hornets are showing they are better than good. Starting this week, Emporia State is in first place in the MIAA and is the only team without a conference loss. Last week Emporia State, 15-1 overall, gave Central Missouri its first conference loss. The Hornets have already beaten Central Missouri and Truman State.

Place to be

There is only one small-college event in the Kansas City area that can draw close to 20,000 or more fans, and that’s the Fall Classic at Arrowhead VII between Northwest Missouri and Pittsburg State. Kickoff is 5 p.m. Saturday. The later starting time is to accommodate young families who have children who participate in youth soccer and football. It was hard for them to get to the game with an early afternoon starting time, said Northwest Missouri athletic director Bob Boerigter.
