When it came to modified racing this weekend, two regulars led the way at Lakeside Speedway.
Chad Lyle and Tim Karrick each had wins in the two-night Capitol Federal Late Model Showdown and Modified Shootout.
Lyle, the 2008 Lakeside modified champion from Lone Jack, dominated the opening night.
He had to wait until the eighth heat before taking the track, but once he reached the dirt he was tough to stop. Lyle quickly moved to the front of the field, never struggling with the heat.
In the feature, Lyle started on the outside third row but used the bottom of the race track to move up.
After a restart, Lyle was right behind leader Mark Schafman of Edwardsville, Kan. After another restart, Lyle got the line on Schafman.
Lyle wouldn’t be denied from that point on, picking up the feature victory over the night’s other 80 entries.
John Allen of Chanute, Kan., was second, while Schafman finished third.
Missing from the top three on Friday night and even the top feature race was Karrick, from Basehor.
Karrick struggled Friday night, racing in the C feature. The same couldn’t be said on Saturday night.
Karrick finished second in his heat race, qualifying him for the A feature. After starting in the middle of the field, Karrick slowly moved to the top five.
From that point, he would hang around the top.
Karrick was battling for second before a restart set up a green, white, checkered finish. On the restart, Karrick flew into second place. As he headed into turn one of the final lap, he got past Schafman for his 42nd win at Lakeside since 2000.
Also on Saturday night, Terry Phillips picked up a late model victory at Lakeside.
After starting 16th in the 50-lap race, Phillips fought off lap traffic to get to the front.
Chad Simpson was second while Alan Vaughn was third.
