Jimmie Johnson is a standout driver who doesn’t stand out

More News

Maybe it’s the name. Maybe it’s hard for a Jimmie Johnson to stand out, no matter how he spells it or how many Sprint Cup points championships he wins. Jimmy Johnson was, of course, the brazen coach who led the Cowboys to two Super Bowl victories. Another Jimmy Johnson was a Hall of Fame cornerback for the San Francisco 49ers in the 1960s and 1970s — his brother was Rafer Johnson, the decathlete. Jimmy Johnson played rhythm guitar for the Muscle Shoals Rhythm Section. And Jimmy Johnson was a 28th-round pick of the New York Mets.

We’re not talking about just Jimmy Johnsons. There is also Jim Johnson, defensive coordinator for the Philadelphia Eagles, and another Jim Johnson, who has been a pretty successful reliever in Baltimore. Jimmy John’s is a popular gourmet sandwich shop with 1,000 locations nationwide. And James B. Johnson is a science-fiction writer with a NASCAR touch; in the book “A World Lost” Johnson’s intergalactic hero is a man named Rusty Wallace, and he comes from the planet D’Earnhardt.

It’s a pretty crowded landscape out there for all the J. Johnsons. Maybe that’s why nobody seems to know much about the racing Jimmie Johnson. The racing Jimmie Johnson has an excellent shot this year of becoming the first driver in NASCAR to win three consecutive points championships since a tough old coot named Cale Yarborough did it 30 years ago. The racing Jimmie Johnson has won almost $65 million in prize money since he showed up out of nowhere on the NASCAR scene less than a month after 9-11. The racing Jimmie Johnson has won 31 races the last five years.

To give you an idea about those 31 victories:

Johnson has won many more races than any other driver in that period. His teammate and inspiration Jeff Gordon is second with 17.

Johnson has won 22 more races than Dale Earnhardt Jr. the last five years.

Johnson has won more than Kurt and Kyle Busch put together. You could throw Matt Kenseth in there, too, and still not get to 31.

Johnson has won one more race than Carl Edwards, Tony Stewart, Mark Martin and the aforementioned and retired Rusty Wallace combined the last five years.

There’s no other way to say it, really: Jimmie Johnson is the most dominant NASCAR racer going, the Tiger Woods of his sport, the Tom Brady of his sport, the Richard Petty of his time.

And yet what do you know about Jimmie? Probably not much. You might have heard that he grew up in California. You might know he started off racing dirt bikes. You might know that Jeff Gordon helped bring him to NASCAR. You might know that he married an Okie from Muskogee, though when he met Chandra she was a model in Manhattan. You might know he picked up golf lately as a hobby and, to tell the one semi-rascally story in his fully vetted biography, he fell off a golf cart last year while trying to wind surf on top. (He broke his wrist and felt stupid. Now he jokes about it.)

You might know he at times has been called the nicest guy in NASCAR, though it’s a title that carries any number of meanings in the good-guy-wears-black world of stock car racing.

“I guess people view me as kind of a PC (politically correct) driver,” he says.

“Are you PC?” I ask.

“I don’t think so,” he says. “Though I guess there are worse ways people can view me.”

Jimmie Johnson is PC. Literally. If you ask Jimmie who he supports this presidential election, he will tell you that he’s been swept up by Barack Obama’s charisma but he isn’t sure about his experience. He will tell you that he’s in awe of John McCain’s experience, but he is worried that the country needs a new direction. He will tell you that he’s the rarest of birds this political season, the truly undecided voter, and he will not let anyone paint him red or blue or any other color.
