Kansas basketball coach Bill Self was awarded the Chicagoland Sports Hall of Fame’s Ray Meyer Award, given annually to the national coach of the year.
Self has never lived in Chicago, but, by virtue of winning the award, he will be inducted into the Chicagoland Sports Hall of Fame on Oct. 15. Last year, Florida’s Billy Donovan won the award and was inducted.
The induction ceremony will have a true KU presence; former KU and Chicago Bears running back Gale Sayers, who has already been inducted, will be receiving the Hall of Fame’s lifetime achievement award.
Rowe was a student at the university, then began his career there in 1963. He previously served as baseball coach, athletics business manager and assistant athletics director.
Rowe became athletic director as the university was making the transition to Division-I status in 1982. He has overseen expansion and improvement of sports facilities, including the new JQH Arena, which opens in November.
The search for a new director of athletics begins next month.

“Matt Brown is conducting his program in a first-class manner in all areas,” Hall said.
