2 Turn two. As you are sitting in the grandstands watching the race, glance over and envision the Hard Rock casino that will be built there.
3 The skies. Last year rain contributed to one of the most controversial finishes in NASCAR history.
Who was the surprise winner of the very first pole at Kansas Speedway?
Biffle aces test
The Sprint Cup series had an open test at Lowe’s Motor Speedway on Tuesday and Wednesday, and it was Greg Biffle who burned the place up.
Biffle was fastest overall with a lap at 185.6 mph on Tuesday night. He was also fastest on Wednesday, making him fastest in two of the three sessions of the test. Dale Earnhardt Jr. was the quick guy in the other session, which was held Tuesday afternoon.
Modifieds at Lakeside
The seventh annual Capitol Federal Late Model Showdown and Modified Shootout will be held at Lakeside Speedway Friday and Saturday nights. Last year, more than 120 competitors raced between the two divisions at the half-mile dirt oval.
Gates open at 5 p.m.; first race is at 7:30 both nights. Lakeside is located five miles north of Kansas Speedway off I-435.
Schumacher gets award
Top-fuel driver Tony Schumacher was selected third-quarter winner of the Driver of the Year Award. Schumacher went unbeaten in the third quarter of the season and led the field in the NHRA’s playoffs.
In the voting by a panel of 17 racing journalists, Schumacher took 10 first-place ballots and received votes from the entire panel. He easily beat Jimmie Johnson, who received two first-place votes.
The award is in its 42nd year of existence. There are quarterly votes every year and then a vote for overall driver of the year.
The Star’s vote went to Johnson.
Jason Leffler won the first pole at Kansas. It was in 2001.
