Yankees close out Yankee Stadium with a 7-3 victory

More News

‘House that Ruth Built’ goes dark

New York won 26 world championships since Yankee Stadium opened April 18, 1923. They won one last time in the ballpark’s almost certain swan song on Sunday.

Johnny Damon and Jose Molina homered as the Yankees beat the Orioles 7-3 and staved off elimination in the AL wild-card chase. For the Yankees to force a playoff, they must win their last six games while the Red Sox lose their last seven.

So trivia buffs are probably safe in noting that while Ruth hit the first homer in the ballpark’s history 85 years ago, it was Molina who hit the last.

Former Yankee greats like Yogi Berra, Whitey Ford, Reggie Jackson and many others turned out for the pregame ceremony. It was Berra, 83 — who coined the phrase “it ain’t over till it’s over” — that perhaps best captured the mood of the night.

“I’m sorry to see it over, I’ll tell you that,” Berra said.
