Chiefs buzz: Another active day for punter Colquitt
Colquitt stays busyPunter Dustin Colquitt might have been the only player in the Chiefs’ locker room who enjoyed that Kansas City went three-and-out on its first five series Sunday.
It kept Colquitt busy, and he likes the extra work.
“That’s kind of what I’m here for,” he said. “I’m sure there’ll be times when I’m not going to be punting well, and the offense is going to carry me.”
Colquitt punted four times in the first quarter, as the Chiefs finished that period without a first down. Colquitt, in his fourth year, finished with six punts and a 51.5-yard average.
He said that sometimes during the first quarter Sunday, it felt as if he were punting every few minutes.
“That’s kind of how this game went,” he said. “There’s not a lot of games where that happens.
“We’ll get it figured out. We’re a young team; we’re figuring things out right now. We’ll be fine.”
Familiar turf
Chiefs linebacker Demorrio Williams recovered a muffed punt Sunday after Falcons returner Adam Jennings misplayed a short hop, sending the ball a few yards behind him.
Maybe it was that Williams knows the field and its tendencies. He played in Atlanta his first four seasons before the Chiefs acquired him this spring.
“No matter where I was — I could’ve been in Seattle — the key thing is trying to win the game,” Williams said. “Just trying to make a play for this team.”
He said he wasn’t blocked during the play. When Jennings misplayed the ball, Williams fell on it at the Falcons’ 41. But the Chiefs turned the ball over on downs near Atlanta’s goal line.
Getting picked on
Atlanta moved three-time All-Pro defensive end John Abraham to the left side Sunday to take advantage of Chiefs right tackle Damion McIntosh. The decision didn’t take long to pay off.
Abraham beat McIntosh on the Chiefs’ first offensive play and sacked Tyler Thigpen for a 7-yard loss.
“I just had it in my mind to do a spin move,” Abraham said. “I didn’t know it was going to work on the first play. I guess you could say I got lucky.”
Abraham had another sack Sunday, forcing a fumble and pushing his NFL-best sack total to six. The Chiefs moved McIntosh to the right side after drafting Branden Albert in the first round this year.
This and that
•Running back Larry Johnson moved past Christian Okoye into second place on the Chiefs’ all-time rushing list. Johnson has 4,981 yards rushing, 84 yards more than Okoye’s total. Johnson needs 1,090 to pass Priest Holmes’ total of 6,070 for the team record.
•Tony Gonzalez had 35 yards on four catches Sunday, moving him closer to the NFL record for receiving yardage for a tight end. Gonzalez, who has 10,011 yards, needs 50 yards to pass Shannon Sharpe.
•Coach Herm Edwards said the Chiefs suffered no injuries Sunday.
