J.R. Todd beat Tony Schumacher in the top-fuel final Sunday, one of an unprecedented four final-round losses for reigning NHRA POWERade Series champions in the NHRA Fall Nationals at Texas Motorplex in Ennis, Texas.
Todd got the first victory for the two-car Lucas Oil team on a hole-shot, turning in a 0.068-second reaction time at the starting line to Schumacher’s 0.084. He drove his dragster to a 3.912 at 309.84 to a quicker and faster Schumacher, who piloted his dragster to a 3.910 at 310.63.
In funny car, Tim Wilkerson dealt Tony Pedregon his first loss of the year in five final rounds. Other winners were Greg Stanfield in pro stock and Chris Rivas in pro stock motorcycle. (Results, C15.)
Safina triumphs in Tokyo
Dinara Safina will move up to No. 3 in the world rankings after dominating fellow Russian Svetlana Kuznetsova 6-1, 6-3 Sunday in the Pan Pacific Open final in Tokyo.
The victory gave the fourth-seeded Safina her fourth WTA singles title this season, tying her with No. 1 Serena Williams for the most this year.
Contador wins Spanish Vuelta
Alberto Contador of Spain won the Spanish Vuelta, completing a sweep of cycling’s three major races after capturing this year’s Giro d’Italia and the 2007 Tour de France.
He achieved the feat in a record 15 months, beating Bernard Hinault’s previous mark of 26 months. Eddy Merckx, Jacques Anquetil and Felice Gimondi also won cycling’s three top races.
Contador finished the Vuelta in 80 hours, 40 minutes, 23 seconds, beating teammate Levi Leipheimer of the United States by 1:01. Carlos Sastre of Spain was third, 4:31 behind.
MacKenzie takes Viking Classic
A day after blowing a lead with a triple bogey on the final hole, Will MacKenzie birdied the par-5 18th three straight times and won the Viking Classic at Madison, Miss., in a playoff.
MacKenzie beat Marc Turnesa on the second playoff hole after Brian Gay dropped out on the first extra hole of the PGA Tour event.
MacKenzie birdied three of the last four holes of regulation for a 4-under 68 and matched Turnesa (70) and Gay (68) at 19-under 269.
Woody Austin of Derby, Kan., finished at 14-under 274.
Willis first in Fifth Avenue Mile
Olympic bronze medalist Nick Willis of New Zealand outleaned American Olympian Bernard Lagat and won the Continental Airlines Fifth Avenue Mile in New York.
Willis finished in 3 minutes, 50.5 seconds and edged Lagat by 0.1 seconds. British Olympian Lisa Dobrisky beat American Olympian Shannon Rowbury. Dobrisky ran 4:18.6. Rowbury ran 4:19.2.
