NASCAR toughens drug testing policy

More News

NASCAR has added itself to the list of professional sports organizations that require random drug testing.

Beginning next year, NASCAR announced Saturday, all drivers, over-the-wall pit-crew members and NASCAR officials will be subject to random tests.

In addition, all drivers in the Sprint Cup, Nationwide and Craftsman Truck series will be required to take “baseline” drug tests prior to the start of the 2009 season. The tests will be conducted by AEGIS Sciences, a sports and forensic testing laboratory.

All crew members and NASCAR officials will also be required to take preseason drug tests. Those tests must be certified by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Service Administration.

Random tests will be conducted almost every week, NASCAR officials said. Those failing the test, even just one time, could be banned for life from NASCAR.

In the past, NASCAR administered drug tests only on the basis of “reasonable suspicion” during the season.

“What we have done,” said Steve O’Donnell, vice president of race operations for NASCAR, “is we feel like we have taken a good policy and made it even better.”

What was not specified during a press conference held at Dover International Speedway, site of today’s Sprint Cup race, was just which substances will be tested for.

“The reason we don’t have a list,” O’Donnell said, “is we believe that a list is restrictive. We know that there are new drugs out there every day. By having a broad policy that doesn’t list anything, we feel we can test for any substance that may be abuse.”

NASCAR officials said several weeks ago that they were working on a new testing policy.

Last weekend at New Hampshire Motor Speedway, the subject of drug testing moved to the forefront when truck series-driver Ron Hornaday Jr. admitted that he had taken testosterone. He said he had done that in an attempt to treat a hyperthyroid condition.

At the time he took it, testosterone was not considered a banned substance by NASCAR. He said he stopped taking it in 2005.

Reaction in the garages to drug testing has been positive over the years, especially among drivers who have called for random exams. In part, many drivers have favored testing for the purpose of self preservation.

“Make no mistake, what we do is dangerous,” driver Bobby Labonte said. “We need to make certain that the competitors are clean when they hit the racetrack.”
