LAWRENCE | Within minutes of leaving the private ceremony at Allen Fieldhouse on Friday night, Brandon Rush was already showing off his new 2008 national championship ring.
“They are kind of beautiful,” Rush said.
Then, while moving it in and out of its case, Rush dropped it on the floor. Twice. It’s probably a good thing then that he doesn’t plan on holding on to it past this weekend.
“I’m going to give it to my grandma,” Rush said, referring to his grandmother, Jeanette Jacobs, who lives in Kansas City. “My grandma’s got all my rings framed in a glass. She’ll put that up there.”
Rush, now with the NBA’s Indiana Pacers, joined 13 of his teammates from the group that beat Memphis in the national title game last April for a celebration weekend that will conclude with the Jayhawks being honored at today’s football game against Sam Houston State. Darrell Arthur, Sasha Kaun and Russell Robinson were unable to attend the ceremony.
Darnell Jackson, who recently signed a three-year deal with the Cleveland Cavaliers, wouldn’t miss it. Jackson was wearing his ring, which features the “KU” logo inside a bed of gems. He says he won’t follow Rush’s path and give it to his mother, Shawn Jackson.
“She’d lose it,” said Jackson, who will instead put it in a safe-deposit box. “She’d carry it around in her purse and leave her purse somewhere, and someone would take it out of there.
“It’s a great accomplishment, getting this championship ring. A lot of guys put hard work into this, even the older guys who were here before us. They tried to do the same thing, but they couldn’t pull it off. I guess it was just our turn.”
Some of those players who laid the foundation for 2008 were in attendance Friday night, including Nick Collison, Kirk Hinrich and Jacque Vaughn. The future of KU basketball could have been represented as well: Five-star recruits John Wall, Thomas Robinson and Daniel Orton were making their aptly timed official visits.
But Friday was about the 2008 team.
Jackson, who recently bought a three-bedroom house in Cleveland, got reflective driving on campus Friday.
“It feels crazy,” Jackson said. “Mario (Chalmers) was talking about how we just wish we could come out of that tunnel one more time, skip practice and just play in the games and start all over. It was a lot of fun.”
