Big 12 insider: Granger injury a purpose pitch?

More News

Did retaliation by Washington offensive linemen cost Oklahoma the service of defensive tackle DeMarcus Granger, who is out for at least a month because of torn ligaments in his foot?

Late in the second quarter of the Sooners’ 55-14 victory at Washington last weekend, Granger was penalized for a personal foul for shoving a Huskies offensive lineman after the whistle was blown. On the next play, Granger was triple teamed. He had to be helped off the field and returned on crutches.

It’s not known whether the ligaments were torn on that play. A decision for surgery will come soon, and if he has an operation, Granger will be out for the rest of the season.

Sooners coach Bob Stoops, during his weekly meetings with reporters, didn’t point fingers at Washington.

“Three guys didn’t say, ‘We’re going to go twist his ankle,’” Stoops said. “There isn’t anyone here whining or complaining about anything.”

Granger is a run-stuffing tackle who hadn’t started this season partly because of back problems. But he was playing his best game of the season against the Huskies.

“He was starting to come on,” Stoops said.

Oklahoma is idle this weekend and finishes up nonconference play next weekend with a visit from TCU.

ALL GAMES SATURDAY UNLESS NOTED

1. MIAMI AT TEXAS A&M (Chs. 2, 9, 2:30 p.m.): Which Aggies team shows up, the one that lost at home to Arkansas State or the one that won at New Mexico? This matchup proved embarrassing to A&M last season, with Miami prevailing 34-17. The Hurricanes have shown improvement in coach Randy Shannon’s second season, and a big reason is the defense of coordinator Bill Young. The former KU coach held the high-powered Florida offense in check.

2. BAYLOR AT UCONN (ESPN2, 7 tonight): The Huskies and South Florida are the only unbeatens remaining in the Big East. Connecticut is getting excellent defensive play but will be challenged by Bears freshman quarterback Robert Griffin. Nothing Hofstra, Temple or Virginia had resembles Griffin. The Huskies quarterback is Tyler Lorenzen, who started his career at Iowa State.

3. IOWA STATE AT UNLV (8 p.m.): A measuring stick game for the Cyclones, who own a 12-game road losing streak. They haven’t won away from Ames since a victory at Texas A&M in 2005. The Rebels are riding a confidence wave after their triumph at Arizona State last weekend, and Iowa State hasn’t played poorly, even in last weekend’s loss at Iowa. Austen Arnaud got the majority of snaps against the Hawkeyes (52 of 67), but coach Gene Chizik said he still plans to rotate Arnaud and Phillip Bates. “There’s no way to say Austen has moved ahead in the quarterback derby and Phillip knows that,” Chizik said.

4. RICE AT TEXAS (FSN, 6 p.m.): Rice didn’t need this: Texas has had extra time to prepare for the Owls after last weekend’s postponement of the Arkansas game because of the weather. Longhorns quarterback Colt McCoy is off to a good start, and it should be a good statistics battle with counterpart Chase Clement. Look for Texas to roll up big numbers in points and yards.

5. BUFFALO AT MU (1 p.m.): Bulls coach Turner Gill won many games at Memorial Stadium as a player and coach for Nebraska, but he lost on his last visit to Columbia, as a Cornhuskers assistant for the 2003 team. That Mizzou victory ended a 24-year losing streak to Nebraska. The Bulls’ rushing defense has been solid. They’re surrendering only 96 yards per game and haven’t given up a run longer than 19 yards.

6. MASSACHUSETTS AT TEXAS TECH (6 p.m.): Tech could be the real minutemen here, as in a point-a-minute offense. UMass has given up 52 points to James Madison and 42 to Holy Cross. They shouldn’t be expected to slow this offense. Where the Minutemen can do some damage is on offense. Quarterback Liam Coen is the Colonial Conference preseason player of the year and is part of some NFL projected drafts.

7. SAM HOUSTON STATE AT KU (Fox College Sports, 6 p.m.): Not a good time for Sam Houston State to visit Lawrence. The Jayhawks will need to re-establish themselves as a team that can physically dominate after getting pushed around for 1 1/2 quarters at South Florida. Look for Kansas’ running game to rev up in this no-contest contest.
