Free Speedway tickets for Guard

Kansas Speedway and Camping World have donated 1,000 tickets to members of the Kansas National Guard for the Nationwide and Sprint Cup race Sept. 27-28 at Kansas Speedway.

The Sprint Cup race is sponsored by Camping World and titled the Camping World RV 400. According to the adjutant general for Kansas, tickets would be given to troops on a first-come, first-serve basis. It is the second year speedway officials have donated tickets to the National Guard.

Contador stays in lead

Despite a fall on Monday, Spaniard Alberto Contador remained the overall leader of the Spanish Vuelta cycling race. He holds a 1-minute, 18-second lead over Astana teammate American Levi Leipheimer.

David Garcia Dapena of Spain won the 15th leg of the race from Cudillero to Ponferrada in northern Spain.

Kiwis set Cup regatta

Team New Zealand will play host to a match racing series Jan 31-Feb. 14 next year for America’s Cup teams left idle by the court case between current holder Alinghi and American challenger BMW Oracle Racing. The regatta will be called the Louis Vuitton Pacific Series and sponsored by the luggage manufacturer.

All the teams from the last America’s Cup have been invited, and the first six entries will be accepted. The series will be set up much like an America’s Cup regatta with six international America’s Cup teams racing for the right to compete in a finals series against Team New Zealand.

The races will be sailed in Emirates Team New Zealand yachts.

Arizona reports Olson violation

The University of Arizona has reported a possible NCAA recruiting violation by men’s basketball coach Lute Olson. The school said a letter sent with Olson’s signature was sent to basketball boosters asking for a donation to Jim Storey’s Arizona Cactus Classic basketball tournament played last May at Arizona’s McKale Center. Olson denies knowledge of the letter.

Olympic swimmer details abuse

Olympic swimmer Margaret Hoelzer, who won three medals in Beijing, has detailed child abuse by a playmate’s father that started when she was 5 years old and didn’t end until the family moved away from Huntsville, Ala. She has made the revelation and is working with National Child Advocacy Center in hopes of preventing what happened to her from happening to other children.

“I was going to their house on a regular basis,” Hoelzer said. “I would spend the night at their house from time to time. ... It was definitely a situation where I was taught to trust that person.”

Subsequent to Hoelzer’s realization as a 11-year-old what had happened to her, the individual was arrested. No formal charges were filed because of lack of evidence, and Hoelzer was not raped.

Elsewhere

•Drag-racing star John Force was back at the Texas Motorplex in Ennis, Texas. It was the site of the worst crash of his career nearly a year ago. He said the return was “very emotional for me, but I’m glad I did it.”

•The Olympic cyclists who wore masks at the Beijing airport have called for the ouster of Steve Roush, the USOC’s chief of sport performance, because of the way he humiliated and bullied them into making an apology “or else” at the Beijing Olympics.
