Key stat: 8,846. Chase Daniel’s career yards passing after his 80-yard TD pass to Jeremy Maclin gave Daniel the MU all-time record, eclipsing Brad Smith’s 8,799 yards. But that was just the start for Daniel, who has 9,153 career passing yards.
SECOND QUARTER
Key play: Nevada’s Colin Kaepernick hit Marko Mitchell with a 42-yard touchdown pass as time expired in the first half, assuring that Missouri would bring back its first-string offense and Daniel for the third quarter.
Key stat: 11. Consecutive possessions that resulted in points with Daniel at quarterback after his 14-yard TD pass to Maclin with 1:31 left in the half.
THIRD QUARTER
Key play: On second down and 6 to go at the Nevada 49, Maclin ran under a bomb deep down the east sideline, hauling in his third TD reception and the fourth TD pass from Daniel.
Key stat: 12. Consecutive scoring drives with Daniel at QB after his TD pass to Maclin. Although Daniel was on the sideline when Tommy Saunders hit Chase Coffman with a TD pass on a fake field goal, the drive was credited to Daniel and boosted the consecutive scoring possessions streak to 13, including 12 touchdowns.
FOURTH QUARTER
Key play: With 4:54 left in the game, reserve linebacker Jeff Gettys picked off a Nick Graziano pass and ran it back 27 yards for a touchdown. The score and the resulting extra point enabled Missouri to tie a school record of 69 points — a mark originally set in 1969 against Kansas in Lawrence.
Key stat: 3. Consecutive games MU linebackers have returned interceptions for touchdowns after Gettys’ pick-six. Sean Weatherspoon did it against Illinois and Southeast Missouri State.
Player of the game: Daniel. The Missouri quarterback showed why he is the top candidate to win the Heisman Trophy according to an Orlando Sentinel poll.
Reason to hope: Believe it or not, this team can get better. Missouri’s defense hasn’t played as well as expected. Neither has safety William Moore, who hobbled off the field again because of a sore right foot. Moore returned but said he might have tried to come back too soon after hurting the foot in the season opener.
Reason to mope: None. Not when the fewest points you’ve scored in three games is 52.
Looking ahead: Buffalo is on the menu for 1 p.m. next Saturday. Eat hearty, Tiger fans.
| A+ | Offense | Chase Daniel hit 23 of 28 passes for 405 yards and four TDs. Jeremy Maclin, Chase Coffman and Tommy Saunders all had at least 100 yards receiving. Oh, and Derrick Washington got 75 yards rushing and two TDs in only eight carries. Go ahead, give ’em another +. |
| B | Defense | Why Missouri continues to blitz has to be some macho thing, because it isn’t effective. OK, so it hasn’t made one bit of difference because of the juggernaut that is the Missouri offense. But there is room for improvement. |
| A+ | Special teams | Jeff Wolfert kicked two more field goals and hasn’t missed an attempt since game No. 4 against Illinois State last season. Wolfert remains perfect for his career on extra points. Wolfert (264 points) passed Zack Abron (252) on the career scoring chart. |
| A+ | Coaching | Go ahead. You find something. Even Kansas fans probably can’t. |
