Harper leaves in ambulance
Kansas senior cornerback Kendrick Harper left Memorial Stadium on a stretcher Saturday night and was taken away in an ambulance after tackling Louisiana Tech wide receiver Phillip Livas with his helmet first.
Harper, a native of Hartwell, Ga., is a starter for the Jayhawks. He transferred to KU from Butler County Community College last season.
Redshirt freshman cornerback Isiah Barfield filled in for Harper.
“Kendrick is in good care right now,” KU coach Mark Mangino said. “I don’t know all the details. We’re still working on that. I don’t want to say anything that is irresponsible. I want to make sure when I talk about him that I have all the information that I need.”
•Just days after being cleared by the NCAA to compete for KU, sophomore kicker Jacob Branstetter connected on field goals of 28, 25 and 26 yards and missed a PAT for the Jayhawks in his collegiate debut.
Branstetter took over for junior college transfer Grady Fowler, who handled the extra points and short kicks in the first game. Fowler missed an extra point against Florida International. Punter Alonso Rojas made field goals of 47 and 37 yards last week. It remains to be seen if Rojas will continue to kick long field goals.
Branstetter was held out of last week’s game because of eligibility issues stemming from his transfer from Air Force.
