Missouri smacks Southeast Missouri State 52-3

COLUMBIA | It wasn’t quite as bad as Sarah Washington predicted.

In a pregame radio interview with KFRU-AM in Columbia, the mother of Missouri star tailback Derrick Washington said the Tigers would win “probably 65-0.”

How bad was it really?

Mizzou beat Southeast Missouri State every which way, 52-3 Saturday night before 62,305 fans who didn’t really care who Missouri was playing.

What did Mizzou gain from wolfing down this cupcake in a 42-0 first half that sent the stars to the sideline to make way for the second- and third- and even fourth-team players?

Confidence. Of the supreme variety.

“If we bring our ‘A’ game, I don’t think we can be beat,” said Washington, who laughed over his mom’s prediction.

“Is that what she said? My mom, she’s into it more than I am almost.”

Southeast Missouri’s game but outmanned Redhawks were out of this one by the end of the first quarter.

Missouri led 21-0 at that point and doubled the score and margin by the time Heisman-hopeful quarterback Chase Daniel gave way to Chase Patton with four minutes to play in the half.

True freshman Blaine Gabbert started the third quarter, burning his redshirt, and then alternated series with Patton the rest of the way.

Patton said he was playing for his uncle Joe, who passed away recently. He completed seven of eight passes for 64 yards. Gabbert hit three of eight for 27 yards and ripped off a 30-yard run down the east sideline of Faurot Field.

Southeast Missouri would have been happy to see Daniel retire even before his last appearance on the field, with about eight minutes to play in the second quarter.

Daniel connected on 16 of 17 passes for 245 yards and threw touchdown passes of 3 yards to Jeremy Maclin, 28 yards to Washington and 28 yards to Jared Perry.

Daniel ended his play with 14 straight pass completions, just one short of the MU school record.

Daniel, like Derrick and Sarah Washington, was brimming with confidence before and after what was expected to be a one-sided game.

Had not Maclin, tight end Chase Coffman, Washington and so many of MU’s offensive stars come out of the game so early, the Tigers likely would have blown away historic records for dominance.

Out there quivering to be broken was the school record of 69 points Missouri scored against Kansas in 1969.

Then there was the biggest margin of victory in modern MU history, 60 points in a 60-0 victory over Centre (Ky.) in 1928.

The Tigers just missed setting a school record for most points scored in a half, the 45 points Missouri scored in the second half against San Diego State in 1979.

The fact those records did not fall was to the credit of Pinkel, who called off not only most of the big dogs, but even some of the ravenous young pups of Missouri’s offense and defense.

“All that work for all those players that needed it, those backup players,” Pinkel said.

The Redhawks passed for 250 yards and wound up with 334 yards total offense.

“I didn’t know what the score was going to be, but I knew we were going to be outmanned,” said Southeast coach Tony Samuel. “It is what it is. If it was the NFL it would have been a preseason game.”

Missouri, with its front-line players in, scored 42 of the Tigers’ 52 points. The reserves put up 10, and perhaps only seven on Jimmy Jackson’s 17-yard fourth-quarter scoring run.

The other three came from kicker Jeff Wolfert, with a 43-yard field goal.

The Tigers totaled 592 yards offense, 336 by air. Mizzou averaged 8.6 yards per play.
