Natalie du Toit led the South African Paralympic team into Beijing’s National Stadium on Saturday, becoming the first person to carry a country’s flag at the opening ceremony of both the Olympics and Paralympics.
The 24-year-old amputee swimmer, who lost her lower left leg in a motorcycle accident in 2001, competed in the 10-kilometer open-water swim at the Beijing Olympics last month and finished 22nd.
At the Paralympics, she is on a quest for five gold medals, which would equal her haul from the 2004 Athens Paralympics.
Radulov issue heads to court
The dispute between the NHL and a newly formed Russian hockey league over forward Alexander Radulov appears headed for court.
The Continental Hockey League withdrew its appeal on five other player transfers at a meeting on Saturday between the International Ice Hockey Federation and nine member countries but couldn’t resolve the Radulov case, the federation said in a statement.
The two leagues will now go to court or arbitration to decide who owns his rights. Radulov had one year remaining on his contract with the Nashville Predators when he signed a deal with the Russian team.

Reid, who finished runner-up twice on the Ladies European Tour this year, totaled 13-under 133 in the 54-hole tournament.
Sorenstam finished with consecutive birdies and eagled the long 12th — her third hole.
Building gets Stringer name
Nike will dedicate the C. Vivian Stringer Child Development Center on Tuesday at its headquarters in Beaverton, Oregon.
Stringer, the Rutgers women’s basketball coach, is the third woman, the second coach and the first African-American woman to have a building named after her on Nike’s campus.
The Stringer Center opened in June and houses 26 classrooms, providing care, learning and development for approximately 300 children between the ages of 6 months and 5 years old.
It’s the second development center on the 177-acre campus.
