Tropical Storm Hanna causes Sprint Cup and Nationwide postponements at Richmond

More News

RICHMOND, Va. | The grounds at Richmond International Raceway were supposed to be full of people and excitement this afternoon. Instead, the place will be deserted and perhaps littered with tree limbs and floodwaters.

Tropical Storm Hanna descended on the Richmond area Friday, and with it came changes to one of NASCAR’s most important weekends.

The Sprint Cup race, originally scheduled for tonight, has been moved to noon on Sunday. The Nationwide series race, which was scheduled for Friday night, was moved to 6 p.m. Sunday.

The postponements were made, NASCAR vice president of corporate communications Jim Hunter said, “In lieu of the weather forecast and what officials tell us about wind and rain.”

Hunter said the storm is expected to produce heavy rain and the winds could knock out power in the area.

The Chevy Rock & Roll 400 at Richmond is the final race before the start of the Chase for the Sprint Cup playoff. It sets the field for the 12-driver, 10-race Chase. This year, there is a large group of drivers whose inclusion in the Chase is up for grabs here.

Drivers, for the most part, shrugged off the changes to the schedule. Some said they were getting the heck out of Richmond.

“You know you are racing at a given time,” Jimmie Johnson said. “You know the conditions. I think it’s going to be easier on the teams and drivers (than the fans) if we can just keep everybody out of trouble. We’re in good shape for the Sunday race.”

Carl Edwards said he may try to fly back to Missouri to spend the day with his family in Columbia.

“I told them to fuel up the airplane,” Edwards said.

Kyle Busch, who is leading the Cup series in points, said he will try to find a race in which to drive.

“I’m trying to find a ride home now and then text my father and try to find out what time practice was tomorrow for the PASS South series race in Newport, Tenn.,” Busch said. “It’s a little quarter-mile race track, and I could get some practice for a short-track race for Sunday maybe.”

PASS South?

“It’s a series that my late-model team runs in,” Busch said. “We have a backup car in the trailer, so we might roll it out and see if I can beat up Alex (Haas, his driver) a little bit.”

Johnson, the defending Cup champion, was considering options.

“I’m not sure what I am doing,” Johnson said. “Trying to find a ride home if I can. If no, just be lazy and sit around and see if any golf carts float by or fly by through the night.”

The television schedule for Sunday has been juggled as well.

The Cup race will move from ABC to ESPN. The Nationwide race will be moved to ESPN2.

The storm moved into the area in midafternoon on Friday. It washed out qualifying for both series. So, fields will be set by owner points.
