Serena Williams defeats Safina to move into the finals of the U.S. Open

More News

NEW YORK | Serena Williams has said that it’s been so long since she won a U.S. Open championship that she doesn’t remember lifting the trophy.

She will get a chance to jar her memory after beating Dinara Safina 6-3, 6-2 in the semifinals on Friday.

Williams, who was in her first U.S. Open semifinal since winning the tournament in 2002, survived having her serve broken in the first game and broke Safina a total of five times in the 1-hour, 28-minute match.

Like the other semifinal, where Jelena Jankovic defeated Elena Dementieva 6-4, 6-4, both players had trouble with the wind and had more unforced errors than winners. But Williams had 21 unforced errors to Safina’s 41.

Williams successfully tamed her shots because of the conditions.

“If it is so windy, I am not going to go for so many winners,” she said on court after the match.

But she did not tame her aggressiveness. Williams hit Safina with a shot in the chest at short range in the second set. She apologized to Safina after the match.

Williams is looking forward to playing against Jankovic. She has a 3-3 record against her.

“She is playing so well and she has nothing to lose, and so do I,” Williams said. “It is going to be a great match.”

It will be Williams’ 12th Grand Slam final, and Jankovic’s first.

Hanna looms
In the not-too-distant future, there might be a retractable roof on Arthur Ashe Stadium, and organizers won’t have to worry about tropical storms like Hanna, which is expected to bring heavy rain and wind to the New York area today.

“It’s a matter of ‘when,’ not ’if,’ ” a dome will be added to Arthur Ashe Stadium, said Arlen Kantarian, the U.S. Tennis Association’s CEO for professional tennis. “It’s the right next thing to do.”

The start of the men’s semifinals — No. 1 Rafael Nadal vs. No. 6 Andy Murray and No. 2 Roger Federer vs. No. 3 Novak Djokovic — has been moved up an hour today. Starting time is 10 a.m. Central time. The tournament also was preparing to delay the women’s final if needed.

If rain forces the postponement of both of the men’s semifinals and the women’s final, which is scheduled for 6 Central time tonight, those matches would be rescheduled for Sunday. If the men’s semifinals are completed, but the women’s final is not, then the tournament plans to play both championship matches Sunday.
