KU fans are turning game day at Memorial Stadium into an experience

There’s a good chance that the Louisiana Tech seniors, who were freshmen when the Bulldogs traveled to Lawrence in 2005 for the Jayhawks’ 34-14 victory, won’t recognize tonight’s game-day experience in Memorial Stadium.

For one thing, KU’s players won’t be bused in from their practice facility across campus. The Jayhawks will be spending their second game day in the Anderson Family Football Complex, adjacent to the southwest corner of the stadium.

“It was kind of different being here already and just walking out to the field,” said KU defensive tackle Jamal Greene. “It was a good experience to have our own stuff here just for the football players.”

That proximity also means that KU fans can get close to the players as they make their way to the field for warm-ups and the game.

“The fans seem to enjoy having the complex here,” KU coach Mark Mangino said. “I think it’s a little more of an intimate setting. They can sit on the hill and watch the players come out of the locker room.”

When the Jayhawks head to the stadium, they’ll see the biggest difference in the game-day atmosphere: a sellout crowd, probably. Last week against lowly Florida International on a holiday weekend, KU set a school record for attendance with 52,112.

That fact wasn’t lost on any of the KU coaches and players.

“The KU football fans,” Mangino said, “this is their way of thanking these players for their hard work. I know that our players appreciate it, but I’ll tell you who really appreciates it — the former players.”

KU defensive coordinator Clint Bowen is one of those former players.

“The kids, they see it,” Bowen said. “When the kids come out of the locker room and there’s people in the stands or on the hill, it really does play a factor. The crowd makes a difference. Now, if we can get them to stay here the whole time, it will be even better.”

Other story lines

1 Will Kansas get its ground game going? The Jayhawks averaged only 3.6 yards per carry against Florida International. This week, KU center Ryan Cantrell said the offensive line hadn’t held up its end of the bargain.

2 Will the Jayhawks miss Fields? KU senior wide receiver Dexton Fields, who led the team in receptions last year with 63, will miss today’s game because of injury. In his place will be speedy freshman Daymond Patterson, who has the coaching staff’s full confidence.

3 Will Branstetter kick? Kansas received word this week that sophomore kicker Jacob Branstetter had been cleared to play by the NCAA. Last week, junior-college transfer Grady Fowler missed an extra point, while sophomore Alonso Rojas made field goals of 47 and 37 yards.
