TOP GAMES

Pittsburg State, 1-0, at Chadron State, 1-0, 1 p.m. Saturday

It’s the first meeting between these two programs. It’s a great game for the Gorillas to get them ready for the MIAA season. Chadron State is ranked No. 8 in the NCAA Division II. Pittsburg State is ranked No. 14. If the Gorillas can win this tough road game, they will be on the road to getting back to playoffs. Boyce’s pick: Pittsburg State 24-21

Lindenwood, 0-0, at MidAmerica Nazarene, 0-0, 1 p.m. Saturday

Lindenwood is favored to win the Heart of America Athletic Conference but opens the season with one of the toughest games. Both teams made the NAIA playoffs last year and have the same goals for this year. Boyce’s pick: MidAmerica Nazarene 35-28

Benedictine, 0-0, at Missouri Valley, 0-0, 6 p.m. Saturday

Benedictine has an opportunity to a make a statement that it’s back among the elite teams in the conference if it can beat the Vikings. Missouri Valley has reached the NAIA semifinals the last two seasons and has enough talent back from those teams to make another run. Benedictine is trying to bounce back from an uncharacteristic 4-7 season. Boyce’s pick: Missouri Valley 21-14

Sitechange: Truman State has moved its Saturday home game at Stokes Stadium against Southern Arkansas to William Jewell College because of delays in the installation of the facility’s synthetic turf. Kickoff is noon.

Emporia State freshman running back Brian Murphy

Size: 5 feet 10, 171 pounds

Hometown (high school): Lawrence (Free State)

Notable: Murphy, who transferred from Kansas, scored a touchdown on an 82-yard punt return in his first game for Emporia State last week. The Hornets beat Western (Colo.) State 42-0.

Q: What was it like to score on a long punt return?

“It was really neat. Earlier in the game I thought I had one. I just knew I going to break one. The team made a nice hole for me.”

Q: Why did you decide to transfer from KU to Emporia State?

“We had a lot of running backs around the same age as me. Instead of sitting for two to three years with not much playing time, I decided I wanted to play. Emporia State’s running game is like KU’s. I thought I would fit right in. The program is headed in the right direction.”

Q: You guys are picked to finish in the bottom half of the MIAA. What do you think the first game will do to the team’s confidence?

“I think we will gain a lot of confidence. Last year we won some games, but we weren’t scoring a lot of points. Putting up 42 points gives our offense confidence, and getting a shutout gives our defense confidence.”

Q: What’s the most popular video game for people your age?

“Madden ’09.”

Q: Are you any good?

“I’m decent. I’m getting better. Some people on our team have tournaments. They take it a little too serious. I just like to have fun.”
