Miami at Florida
The ghost of Sunshine State football past vs. present. The Gators are the state’s kingpin, while the Hurricanes have joined Florida State on the state’s bronze-medal stand behind South Florida. Over the last two years, Florida is 22-5 with a national championship while Miami is 12-13. The Hurricanes have athletes, a new determination and are coming off a pasting of Charleston Southern last week. Also, redshirt freshman quarterback Robert Marve, suspended for the opener, is back. He sat out last season while recovering from injuries in a car crash, so he’ll be taking his first college snaps in front of 90,000 frenzied Gators. Florida, which has lost six straight in the series, is playing for a national championship while Miami continues to look for respectability. The Gators should live up to their role as a three-touchdown favorite. Watch for linebacker Brandon Spikes and speedster Percy Harvin to return for Florida.
Upset special
Stanford over Arizona State
It’s starting to feel like a turnaround season on The Farm. Stanford is more physical and competitive than it’s been in years, and the opening-weekend victory over Oregon State was no fluke. Winning at Tempe would be a monumental upset, but we saw what coach Jim Harbaugh’s program was capable of last year when it knocked off Southern California.
Also worth watching
West Virginia at East Carolina
Suddenly, a ballgame. The Pirates stunned Virginia Tech last weekend, turning their home opener into a must-see. If East Carolina can pull off another one, it not only flies to the top of Conference USA consideration but gets squarely on the BCS bowl radar.
Georgia Tech at Boston College
Both teams figured to be also-rans in their divisions, that is until favorites Virginia Tech and Clemson fell last weekend. Now the Yellow Jackets and Eagles rightfully think first place is up for grabs, and this winner is as good a favorite as anybody.
Ohio at Ohio State
Interesting because of the uncertain status of running back Beanie Wells, and the possibility of the Buckeyes losing focus with a trip to Southern California next week. Wells’ mother said he had a toe injury, but not turf toe, and that he would play against the Bobcats. “He doesn’t want to miss a week and be rusty for USC,” Paulette Wells told the Columbus Dispatch.
On the horizon
Kansas at South Florida, next Friday
A game with national-championship implications? Who would have thought?
Georgia at South Carolina, Sept. 13
The Gamecocks won this game last season.
UCLA at Brigham Young, Sept. 13
Meeting for the third time in 13 games.
Ohio State at Southern California, Sept. 13
Trojans were so good last weekend they jumped to No. 1. Loser has plenty of national-title recovery time.
