About 1,000 people from all across football gathered at the Kennedy Center on Tuesday and celebrated the life of Hall of Fame lineman and longtime NFL union head Gene Upshaw.
Among those speaking — until they broke down in tears — were Art Shell, John Madden, former NFL commissioner Paul Tagliabue and his son Justin Upshaw.
“I’m thinking right now Gene’s up in heaven,” Madden said tearfully near the end of his remarks. “And he’s looking down, and he has a quip for everything… He’s probably saying: ‘John, you’ve been up there long enough. Why don’t you go sit down … I’m just going to sit down like Gene said.”

Oracle racing tests boat
The BMW-Oracle sailing team began testing its 90-foot by 90-foot trimaran Tuesday near Anacortes, Wash. The space-age yacht reached 20 knots of speed in wind of 6-12 knots, and tactician John Kostecki estimates that 36-40 knots may be possible when the boat is sailed to its maximum.
The boat has three carbon-fiber hulls, a mast 158 feet tall and reportedly cost more than $10 million. The boat, built for a one-on-one showdown with Alinghi, may never sail in an America’s Cup race pending the outcome of the latest appeal in the New York Supreme Court.
Fastest men on earth
Asafa Powell of Jamaica ran the second-fastest 100 meters ever when he ran 9.72 seconds at the Athletissima Grand Prix meet in Lausanne, Switzerland. The fastest man, countryman Usain Bolt, equaled his rival’s accomplishment, running the second-fastest 200 ever, crossing in 19.63. Bolt holds the world record in both events.
“He did well tonight, and I congratulate him,” Bolt said of the man from whom he took the 100-meter record earlier this year.
