Chiefs notes: Edwards won’t divulge injury information

Playing Patriot games

New England is one of the league’s stingiest teams when it comes to dispensing information about injured players. Perhaps playing the Patriots’ game or perhaps signaling a new organizational policy, coach Herm Edwards refused to disclose injury information about the Chiefs other than to say all 53 players were at Monday’s walk-through practice, which was closed to the media.

“I’m not going to give information out that I don’t have to give,” Edwards said. “It’s not fair. It’s not fair to this organization.”

The Chiefs must issue an injury report with the league on Wednesday.

The Chiefs released their first regular-season depth chart and for the first time since spraining his foot, rookie Branden Albert is listed as the starter at left tackle instead of Herb Taylor.

B.J. Sams is listed as the punt returner and Dantrell Savage as the kickoff returner.

•SIX PLAYERS TO PRACTICE SQUAD: Wide receivers Marques Hagans and Kevin McMahan, offensive lineman Edwin Harrison, defensive tackle Derek Lokey, defensive end Jason Parker and safety Dowayne Davis were all signed to the practice squad.

All but Hagans and Davis went to training camp and played in the preseason for the Chiefs. Hagan played for the Rams in the preseason, Davis with the Cowboys.

The Chiefs have two open spots on their practice squad. One is likely to go to wide receiver Scott Mayle, who went to camp with the Bills. The other would probably go to linebacker Weston Dacus, who was in camp with the Chiefs.

The Chiefs have a ninth practice-squad player, linebacker Aden Durde, a European who doesn’t count against their limit because he was assigned by the league office.

•WHO WANTS IT MORE?: Cornerback Patrick Surtain was puzzled by the assertion that the Patriots, who won their first 18 games last season before being upset by the Giants in the Super Bowl, should be hungrier for a victory than the Chiefs.

The Chiefs, who lost their last nine games last season, haven’t won a game since beating the Raiders 12-10 on Oct. 21, 2007, in Oakland.

“The taste in our mouths,” Surtain said, “should be a little more sour than the taste in theirs.”
