The Chiefs for several months have boasted of their youth movement, but here’s a statistic that puts it in perspective.
Thirteen rookies, or almost one-quarter of their roster, survived Saturday’s final round of cuts and could head with the Chiefs to New England for next Sunday’s regular-season opener.
As many as nine rookies should receive significant playing time early in the season. Fullback Mike Cox, offensive tackle Branden Albert and cornerback Brandon Flowers are starters.
Running back Jamaal Charles, tight end Brad Cottam, wide receiver Will Franklin, cornerback Brandon Carr and safety DaJuan Morgan figure to play a significant amount. Dantrell Savage might return kicks against the Patriots.
Two other rookies, wide receiver Kevin Robinson and tight end Michael Merritt, are on injured lists and could join the Chiefs later in the season.
The cuts contained no surprises. The Chiefs not only kept Savage, but also veteran kick return specialist B.J. Sams.
The Chiefs are heavy at halfback, where they kept five players, and cornerback, where they have six. Players at those positions could be vulnerable in the next couple of days.
The Chiefs are likely to claim one or more players off waivers from other teams. The Chiefs are light at offensive line, where they have eight players, and linebacker, where they have six.
The Chiefs claimed three players off waivers from other teams after final roster cutdowns last year. Backup quarterback Tyler Thigpen remains.
