San Jose Earthquakes defeat Wizards 2-1

More News

SANTA CLARA, Calif. | Throughout the second half Saturday night, the Kansas City Wizards outplayed the San Jose Earthquakes. They had scored the equalizing goal and looked very much like they were going to leave the Bay Area with at least a tie.

And then, disaster struck.

The Earthquakes’ Darren Huckerby headed the ball past Wizards goalkeeper Kevin Hartman in the 83rd minute to give San Jose a 2-1 victory at Buck Shaw Stadium. For Kansas City, 6-8-8, the loss dealt a blow to the team’s already slim playoff hopes.

“It’s cruel to give up a goal like that after we played so well the whole half,” said Davy Arnaud, who scored the Wizards’ goal.

In the showdown between Major League Soccer’s two last-place teams, the victory allowed the streaking Earthquakes, 6-9-7, to escape the Western Conference cellar. It was the seventh consecutive game without a loss for San Jose.

The Earthquakes dominated first-half action and peppered Hartman with seven shots on goal. San Jose broke through in the 43rd minute when Alvarez slipped between two Wizards defenders and headed a cross from Ronnie O’Brien past a leaping Hartman.

But the second half was a completely different story as Kansas City coach Curt Onalfo made changes in the Wizards’ offense.

Midfielder Sasha Victorine had reinjured a quadriceps muscle in practice earlier in the week and did not travel to San Jose. He was replaced in the lineup by Kurt Morsink. But Onalfo exchanged him in the second half with attacking midfielder Carlos Marinelli. The coach also had defender Jack Jewsbury and midfielder Michael Harrington switch positions.

The moves produced numerous scoring chances as Kansas City notched eight shots on goal. The Wizards finally solved Earthquakes goal keeper Joe Cannon in the 64th minute, when Arnaud, camped out in the box as he beat defender Jason Hernandez, converted a beautiful low pass from Harrington.

“We were putting constant pressure on them, but the reality was we needed another goal,” Onalfo said.
