Wizards face old teammates in Earthquakes’ Garcia, Sealy

More News

Nick Garcia said, as far as he can remember, it’s rained only one day since February when he arrived in San Jose, Calif.

“I can see why people come out here and never want to leave,” he said.

Garcia’s new hometown is going to seem even sweeter tonight. The Wizards, Garcia’s former team for the last eight Major League Soccer seasons, arrive in San Jose to take on the expansion Earthquakes, Garcia’s new team after a trade during last offseason.

Kickoff is set for 9 p.m. at Buck Shaw Stadium at the University of Santa Clara.

Garcia won’t be the only San Jose player with an extra bounce in his step. Forward Scott Sealy was traded to San Jose on July 14 after three-plus seasons scoring goals with the Wizards.

And even if the two ex-Wizards didn’t want to talk up their motivations going up against their old team for the first time, they didn’t have to. The Wizards know from experience they’re going to be getting Garcia’s and Sealy’s best efforts — and then some.

“When I played, it didn’t matter whether it was one season after, or 10 seasons after,” said Wizards technical director Peter Vermes. “I don’t remember losing to a team that traded me. That was my mentality.

“If players don’t want to show an old team they made a mistake in trading you, then they’re not a competitor and shouldn’t be playing. I certainly expect that (competitiveness) from Nick Garcia and Scott Sealy.”

As for Garcia and Sealy, they said they’re mostly interested in continuing the Earthquakes’ recent run of good form, which includes a six-game unbeaten streak, and playing themselves into the MLS playoffs. Though they’re in last place in the Western Conference, the Quakes find themselves just four points out of third place in the bunched-up division and an automatic postseason berth.

Both Garcia and Sealy have thrived in their new environment. Garcia has started and played in 15 of the Earthquakes’ 21 games and dished out two assists. And in his short time with his new club, Sealy has scored one goal and handed out two assists in five games.

“I’m definitely enjoying it,” Seely said. “It’s new scenery. I have no complaints so far. I’ve got new teammates, new guys to get used to. It’s coming along.”

You won’t get Garcia or Sealy to say this game means any more or less than any other. It’s just another game in a stretch of games where they’re all vital.

“It’s another game,” Sealy said. “Whether we’re playing Kansas City or Houston, the objective is to get points. It doesn’t matter who we’re playing.

“We’re going to do whatever possible to get our team points. If that’s against my old teammates, so be it.”
