He’s going to see Elvis tonight at the Edward Jones Dome. And perhaps every Saturday — regardless of where Elvis is playing — from now through early December.
A promise is a promise. So Jeff Fisher will be there for Elvis — Fisher, that is, Jeff’s son and Missouri’s starting left tackle — when the Tigers take on Illinois at 7:30 tonight.
“He told me he would be at the first game I started,” Elvis Fisher said. “When I told him, he was real excited for me. The next day he got a plane ticket.”
Had Elvis started as a true freshman, Jeff Fisher might have had a problem. He worked South Florida football games last year as a radio producer.
It had already been decided Jeff Fisher wouldn’t do that this season. But he did take off this weekend, leaving this message on his radio station’s Web site:
“Look for No. 72 on ESPN. Elvis will be in the house.”
Jeff Fisher won’t be the only one focusing on his son, a 6-foot-5, 300-pound redshirt freshman who has won a position that requires him to protect MU quarterback Chase Daniel’s back.
Illinois will certainly test Fisher. The veterans of the Missouri offensive line, such as left guard Ryan Madison and right guard Kurtis Gregory, know it.
“We’re going to have to be able to handle whatever they bring to us,” Gregory said. “Ryan’s over there, too. He’s had three years of experience. They’re going to blitz wherever they want to blitz to begin with. But we’ll be ready.
“He’s ready.”
Fisher has been prepared, he said, by a year on the scout team and most of August on the No. 2 offense, fighting off starting defensive end Stryker Sulak and speedy rush end Aldon Smith of Raytown on the scout team.
Still, the inability to predict the unknown is what frightens many Missouri fans, if not Daniel.
“What kind of a question is that?” Daniel spat out recently when asked whether he had confidence Fisher wouldn’t allow Illinois to put Daniel on the ground.
“I like all our offensive lineman. They’ll do the job.”
•WOODLAND ELIGIBLE: MU confirmed Friday that Rolandis Woodland, freshman wide receiver from St. Louis, has been ruled eligible by the NCAA. Previously ruled eligible were running back Drew Temple of Rockhurst and Smith. All three are expected to redshirt.
•WHERE: Edward Jones Dome, St. Louis
•TV/RADIO: ESPN; KMBZ (980 AM)
•JUICE IS LOOSE? Let’s see whether reports that Illinois quarterback Juice Williams’ passing has improved by leaps and bounds are true. Missouri is likely to make sure Williams does not beat the Tigers with his feet. Can he do it with his arm?
•STEPPING UP? Because Danario Alexander will be out until probably the start of Big 12 Conference play, Jared Perry will be asked to step up at Alexander’s wide-receiver slot. Perry promises he will, especially with so little attention being paid to him. “Teams are sleeping on me,” Perry said. “I’m going to have to wake ’em up.”
•RUNNING WILD? Illinois held Missouri to 70 yards in 33 rushing attempts last season, an average of 2.1 yards a carry. Are the Illini ready for tailback Derrick Washington, who did not play in this game as a true freshman in 2007?
