Missouri releases basketball schedule

More News

COLUMBIA | Trying to get back to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since the 2003 season, Missouri men’s basketball will play a 2008 schedule that includes at least 10 teams that made the tournament last season.

Six of those teams are Big 12 Conference foes Kansas, Kansas State, Texas, Oklahoma, Texas A&M and Baylor. The Tigers will also take on tournament teams Georgia, Xavier, Oral Roberts and Coppin State.

“This is certainly another challenging schedule for our team,” MU coach Mike Anderson said.

More so because Missouri has seven players — including five true freshmen — who have never played a game in a Tigers uniform and who will need to step up quickly.

“It gives them an opportunity to,” Anderson said. “We’ll see which guys will step up. But that’s why we recruited them.”

The Tigers open play this weekend with three exhibition games in Canada. The regular season starts with home games against Prairie View A&M (Nov. 15) and UT-Chattanooga (Nov. 17). The latter game will serve as the first round in the 2008 O’Reilly Auto Parts Puerto Rico Tip-Off.

The team leaves for San Juan, Puerto Rico on Nov. 18 and plays Nov. 20 against Xavier. the first of three games in four days in an eight-team bracket that includes Memphis, Seton Hall and Southern Cal.

The finals of the Puerto Rico Tip-Off will be televised on ESPN. All other consolation games will be televised nationally on ESPNU.

Missouri is at home against Cal on Dec. 7, a part of the Big 12/Pac 10 Hardwood Series.

The annual Braggin’ Rights game with Illinois rolls around on Dec. 23 in St. Louis.

Missouri opens Big 12 action at Nebraska on Jan. 10. The Tigers play Kansas in Columbia on Feb. 9, an 8 p.m. tip-off set for ESPN. The return game in Lawrence will be March 1, a 1 p.m. tip-off set for CBS.

Complete TV listings and game times will be announced later.
