National retailer says it would bring large RV rally to KCK if state approves casino

A national retailer of recreational vehicles has given the state of Kansas another thing to consider as it ponders a decision on building a casino in Wyandotte Country.

Officials of Camping World said they would commit to bringing a national recreational vehicle rally to Kansas Speedway in 2010 if the Kansas Lottery Gaming Facility Review Board grants the speedway and its partners the right to build and manage a Hard Rock Hotel & Casino at the track.

Such a rally could attract 6,000 recreational vehicles and 18,000 people. Dubbed the “Heart of America RV and Outdoor Rally,” organizers said it could generate a $10 million economic impact for the area.

“The combination of amenities provided by the speedway and an adjacent premium gaming, entertainment and retail destination development like the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino would make the decision to bring our annual RV rally to Kansas Speedway very easy,” Camping World/FreedomRoads chairman and CEO Marcus Lemonis said.

The commitment would be for five years.

The review board is considering four proposals to build a casino in Wyandotte County. The Kansas Speedway proposal is backed by International Speedway Corp. Its partner is the Cordish Co.

Each of the four groups has made an initial presentation to the review board.

The Kansas Speedway group has said that if it is awarded the rights, it will petition NASCAR for a second Sprint Cup date and will also construct a road-racing course in the speedway’s infield to have professional sports-car races and car-club outings.

Speedway president Jeff Boerger said Tuesday that the RV rally represented something that the three other bidders would not be able to offer.

Camping World recently signed on as title sponsor of this year’s Sprint Cup race at Kansas.

SORENSON’S MOVE: Reed Sorenson said his decision to leave Chip Ganassi Racing with Felix Sabates and sign with Gillett Evernham Motorsports is all about becoming more competitive.

“I just felt like it was the right thing for me to do, to come over here,” Sorenson said Tuesday. “I looked at it more as a competitive change.”

The Ganassi NASCAR operation is going through tough times. Earlier in the year, it had to shut down the team of Dario Franchitti. Its remaining drivers, Sorenson and Juan Pablo Montoya, will not make the Chase for the Sprint Cup Championship.

Gillett Evernham, on the other hand, has moved forward this year. Kasey Kahne has two victories and is 56 points out of 12th place.

SHOOTOUT FORMAT: The Budweiser Shootout will have a new format for the 2009 Sprint Cup season. The field for the event, which is run the weekend before the Daytona 500 at Daytona International Speedway, will comprise the top six teams in 2008 owner’s points from each manufacturer.

That means the field will have 24 cars — six each from Dodge, Chevrolet, Ford and Toyota. In the past, the field was made up of pole winners from the season before.

“What we tried to do was to find a new opportunity that would help the four manufacturers, who put so much into the sport,” said Jim Hunter, NASCAR vice president of corporate communications.
