Only the top 120 players in the FedEx Cup standings are eligible to play this week at the Deutsche Bank Championship in Norton, Mass. He had a margin of just 120 points over the final qualifier.
If he hopes to play in the third week of the playoffs, he will have to make the cut — and do much better than that.
Ditto for Woody Austin of Derby, Kan., and Tom Pernice Jr., formerly of Lee’s Summit. Neither of them made the cut either. Austin dropped from 34th to 59th. Pernice fell from 67th on the list to 94th.
The changes can be dramatic from week to week. Vijay Singh, who started out the playoffs seventh in the standings, is now the leader. Sergio Garcia jumped up from 12th to second. And Kevin Sutherland made a huge jump toward the front by finishing tied for second — moving from 57th in the standings to the No. 3 spot.
Phil Mickelson, who is ranked No. 2 in the world and was third in the FedEx Cup standings last week, tied for 19th and dropped to fourth in the standings. He is the defending champion at the Deutsche Bank Championship.
“It was a good round,” Mickelson said of his final-round 68 (his only round under 70). “It gives me some momentum to carry over into this week. But for me, personally, I need to shoot a bit lower.”
After this week’s tournament, the Tour will move to St. Louis for the BMW Championship at Bellerive CC. The field will be limited to only the top 70 in the standings.
The FedEx Cup playoffs will then break for two weeks for the Ryder Cup matches Sept. 18-21 at Louisville, Ky. Then the final week of the playoffs will be the Tour Championships in Atlanta.
