Add third baseman Alex Gordon to the growing list of Royals on the disabled list.

The club placed Gordon on the 15-day list prior to Saturday’s game against the Detroit Tigers at Kauffman Stadium. The move was expected after Gordon was diagnosed Friday with a torn right quadriceps muscle.

The Royals replaced Gordon on the roster by activating infielder Alberto Callaspo from the disabled list. Callaspo was three for 16 in four games while on a rehab assignment at Class AAA Omaha.

Callaspo started Saturday’s game at second base,

Gordon suffered the injury Thursday while making charging pickup and throw on a slow grounder in a 10-3 loss to Cleveland. He is the fourth player placed by the Royals on the disabled list since Tuesday.

The others were pitcher Luke Hochevar (bone bruise and strained muscles in his rib cage), outfielder Mitch Maier (multiple facial fractures) and pitcher Ron Mahay (plantar fascia in his left foot).

Callaspo batted .290 in 42 games before being placed on the disabled list June 28 for unspecified medical reasons one day after being cited for driving under the influence.
