Injuries have struck the Royals so hard in the last few days that outfielder Mark Teahen is back at third base for the first time since Sept. 5, 2006.
“It’s his old position, but it’s new to him this year,” Royals manager Trey Hillman said. “We will see how it goes.
“He worked on it a little bit in Chicago. He looked pretty natural over there. I’d like to see what T can do at his old position.”
Although third baseman Alex Gordon hasn’t been placed on the disabled list, an examination revealed a tear in the upper right side of his leg. Gordon left Thursday’s game in Cleveland after experiencing tightness in his quadriceps while making a charging pick-up and throw on a grounder to third base.
“We are thinking: A couple of weeks, and I will be back in there,” Gordon said. “You’ve played all year, and you just want to end the season on a good note. The season is winding down, and you want to finish it up. It’s tough.”
Teahen said he was “just having fun with it” when he started taking ground balls at third base on the recently completed road trip.
But now Teahen has to take fielding grounders seriously.
“The ball gets on you a lot quicker at third than it does in right field,” Teahen said. “I’ve just got to make sure I’m ready every pitch and zone in.”
Roster move
It’s seemingly a daily occurrence: The Royals place a player on the disabled list and call somebody up.
On Friday, reliever Ron Mahay went on the disabled list and starter Kyle Davies was recalled from Class AAA Omaha.
Mahay made just one brief appearance since Aug. 6 because of plantar fasciitis, an inflammation of the tissue along the bottom of the foot — in Mahay’s case, the left foot. His time on the disabled list will be backdated to start Aug. 16.
The Royals placed pitcher Luke Hochevar and outfielder Mitch Maier on the disabled list earlier in the week. Hochevar has a deep bruise and strained muscles in his rib cage, while Maier suffered multiple facial fractures when hit by a pitch.
“It is pretty bad as far as injuries go,” Hillman said. “But everybody else has had them to some degree.
“It’s been a rash obviously. It wasn’t a good road trip, going 1-8. It wasn’t entirely the injuries’ fault. I don’t want to point to injuries. We didn’t pitch good enough to win those games. We didn’t play good enough defense, and we didn’t hit good enough.”
Grudzielanek back in KC
Mark Grudzielanek was back in the Kansas City clubhouse after spending time at home in San Diego.
Grudzielanek, who went on the disabled list Aug. 2 because of a right ankle injury, isn’t sure he will be able to play again this season.
“I’m going to have an MRI next week,” Grudzielanek said. “It will be my fourth in four weeks. Once we see that, we will see how much healing its done and go from there.”
Grudzielanek said he hasn’t done a lot since he tore his deltoid ligament in his right ankle when collided with Ross Gload on a pop up. He’s been on the bike some.
Grudzielanek is certain that he will play again next year and possibly the year after that.
