Chiefs’ No. 1 pick Dorsey used to being a winner

More News

Glenn Dorsey probably knew his Kansas City experience wouldn’t be easy when Chiefs defensive line coach Tim Krumrie said it was his turn — and they were going one-on-one.

It was Dorsey’s pro day at LSU last March. He had gone through an hour of drills and running, all of it an audition for NFL coaches, executives and scouts who were there to watch Dorsey and learn whether he really was as good as his statistics and awards suggested.

Krumrie is a 48-year-old coach now, but he played defensive tackle for 12 NFL seasons. He wanted to see for himself whether Dorsey could hang.

“He just grabs you,” Dorsey remembers. “You’re already tired. He just comes and grabs you; you’ve got to try to get him off you for like five minutes. ‘It’s me and you. I’m going to grab you. Get me off of you.’ ”

That’s the beginning of Krumrie’s standard up-close drill. Normally, coaches don’t do this. But Krumrie personally checks out all the defensive linemen the Chiefs are considering. Dorsey made it out of Krumrie’s final examination, but that might have been the rookie’s easiest challenge this year.

The Chiefs don’t have high expectations for this season. They’re rebuilding, and that means the team will be packed with young players without much NFL experience. Dorsey is one of them. The Chiefs drafted him with the fifth overall pick because they think Dorsey has the physical skills to be an elite lineman. The next — and more grueling — test will be whether Dorsey can handle the mental grind, which might include more losing than he’s ever experienced.

He went to LSU, which doesn’t do much losing. The Tigers won the BCS championship in Dorsey’s final game and were 43-9 during Dorsey’s four seasons. Now, he’s playing on what could be one of the NFL’s worst teams, a team that went 4-12 last season.

“It’ll be tough losing a lot,” he says, shaking his head.

Dorsey doesn’t want to talk about it. He’s walking toward the locker room after another long practice at training camp, and someone wants to talk to him about losing?

The only thing that gets some of these players through the day is the fact there are games to be played. The fun part, Dorsey calls it.

He has cushioned his mind with thoughts of those games and the idea that this season might not be so bad, after all. Dorsey stops walking and wants to make his point.

“It’s reality sometimes, you know?” he says. “But, I mean, we’re going to find ways to get better even if we lose.

“If we lose, I’m not the only one to lose. It’s me and my teammates. I just know that if I’m feeling bad, the whole team is feeling bad. We’ve just got to do our best to keep each other up — if that was to happen.”

Dorsey and most of the Chiefs aren’t ready to say this year’s team won’t be better than it was last year. Then again, last year’s Chiefs had the franchise’s worst record in 30 years and ended the season with nine consecutive losses.

Dorsey is part of the Chiefs now. He says he has to move past all the winning he experienced at LSU.

In Louisiana, Dorsey represented the school and all that winning. He couldn’t walk around a mall or sit in a restaurant without a grandmother hurrying two children over to meet Dorsey and talk about that time an injured Dorsey lined up against Auburn, and when the ball was snapped, Dorsey tossed aside 282-pound Auburn guard Chaz Ramsey as if Ramsey weighed as much as a broomstick, and tackled running back Brad Lester in the backfield. Dorsey jumped off the turf cheering and dancing like that didn’t happen every week.
