Tebow may have a better season than his Heisman-winning 2007 but not repeat as the winner. There has been only one Heisman two-timer, Ohio State running back Archie Griffin in 1974-75. In the last few years, Oklahoma quarterback Jason White and Southern California quarterback Matt Leinart could have repeated after winning the trophy as a junior. Instead, both finished third the next year.
Tebow’s Gators figure to be better than the 9-4 group of last year, and with similar numbers he could have bookend Heismans.
QB Chase Daniel, Missouri
Sometimes a candidate needs one season to introduce himself to the nation. That was Daniel last year. If last year’s fourth-place finisher duplicates his numbers from last season he’ll be in the thick of the race.
QB Pat White, West Virginia
He’s one of the game’s most dynamic players and similar to 2001 Heisman winner Eric Crouch. White is bidding to join Donovan McNabb as a three-time Big East offensive player of the year.
LB James Laurinaitis, Ohio State
He’s already won the major defense awards, so a Heisman candidacy is next. Laurinaitis will get a maximum-exposure opportunity on Sept. 13 when the Buckeyes visit Southern California.
QB Graham Harrell, Texas Tech
For all the astounding numbers posted by Tech quarterbacks in the Mike Leach era, none has been a Heisman finalist or consensus All-America. That could change with Harrell, who could become a two-time 5,000-yard passer.
