Carlos Bocanegra scored a goal for the United States in the 69th minute off a corner kick from DeMarcus Beasley, who had just come into the soccer game as a substitute for Eddie Lewis. Bocanegra was wide open in front of the goal when he got the pass from Beasley
The goal lifted the U.S. to a 1-0 win over Guatemala in a World Cup qualifier that included two red cards. Trinidad & Tobago defeated Cuba 3-1 in the other game in the group.

Connor McHenry of Jefferson City defeated Barden Berry of Kingston, N.C., 2 and 1 at the U.S. Amateur golf tournament in Pinehurst, N.C. Drew Lethem of Camdenton, who played high school golf at Olathe East, lost 3 and 2 to Billy Horschet of Grant, Fla.
Japan, Hawaii advance in Series
Japan advanced to the International finals of the Little League World Series in South Williamsport, Pa., with an 11-4 win over Willemstad, Curacao. In the late game Waipahu, Hawaii, defeated Mill Creek, Wash., 9-4. Washington stranded 11 runners in the game.
Today’s semifinals will pit Matamoros, Mexico, against Maracaibo, Venezuela at 3 p.m. In the other U.S. semifinal, Lake Charles, La., will meet Tampa, Fla.
It pays to kick up a stink
A court in Naples, Italy, awarded damages to a Napoli soccer fan upset by banners displayed by Inter Milan fans when the teams played each other last October. One banner referred to Naples as the “sewer of Italy” and another said “Ciao Cholera sufferers.” Both were in reference to a garbage strike in Naples.
The Napoli fan was said to be “deeply hurt” according to his lawyer, and the Naples court ordered Inter Milan to pay him $2,200 for “existential damage.”

•Franciscan University sophomore Kelly Roggensack was killed when a van carrying her cross-country team crashed in Pennsylvania. Six other teammates were injured, two were taken to a Pittsburgh hospital.
•Connecticut has officially released Elena Delle Donne from her basketball scholarship, a move that could allow the former top-rated recruit to play at Delaware. She would be eligible to play volleyball immediately. She would have to get NCAA approval to play basketball.
